When does an applicant get their PR card? My wife would like to take on my last name, and we are concerned her PR card will be issued with her maiden name. I know that once she is in Canada as long as we present our marriage certificate, all her other government ID can easily be issued in my last name. Is the same true about the PR card? Is it issued at landing, and can the name change be done then?

thanks!

If the spouse is "landed" and her COPR is in her maiden name, her PR card will be issued in her Maiden name. Note that in Quebec a spouse cannot change her name because of marriage.

Is it possible to request a new PR card in your married name, if you wait to change your name until you complete the PR process?

You'd need to change the name on your passport before, I believe.

Changing a passport is not a possibility for my spouse. As you see, in most middle eastern countries wives do not take on husbands last names, and this name change process is not legally recognized and hence cannot be completed as it will not be honoured by the country in which her passport is issued. That's why most families from those countries keep original documents in maiden names, and then take on a new hyphenated names (maiden-Husband's last) in their Canadian documents.

So I know it won't be an issue getting social security, health card, and even a Canadian passport in her new hyphenated last name, but is a PR card a simple request of name change or more to it?

CanadianDude, sorry for stealing your thread, but for the first time in forever someone seems to know something about my particular problem and I had to ask. I hope someone will have some info for you soon :)

S/he cannot, but it was also my understanding that if I take a trip to the embassy, change my name in my home country's official registries, and subsequently get a new passport in my married name, I can have a PR card issued in that same name regardless of living in Quebec. Am I mistaken?

Thank you for your answer! And sorry for I am replying so late(I couldn't find the thread anymore lol)
I am still confused about when you exactly can call yourself a PR-holder.. Is that when the sponsorship is approved? And what does the name change is got to do with this? I assume this is only for married couples? Can you explain what ''COPR'' is?
