Hello -
I am a US citizen who has been offered a post doc in Saskatchewan. The university has been telling me a lot of conflicting things about immigration. First I was told to apply for a work permit at the border, since I am a US citizen, and have the required documents. I do not need a labor evaluation as a post doc. I have the offer letter, passport, bank statement and my university transcripts. Now, two weeks before I am supposed to start I got an e-mail from the U saying I should apply via the Canadian consulate in my country. However, the consulate says it takes two MONTHS to process work permits. It also does not specify what type of id I need to send in (I don't want to send off my driver's license or passport for two months without need - can I send in a copy?). The consulate in LA will not let you talk to someone and I cannot find out if applying at the border is the best option. This is already so complicated because I am moving myself in a U-Haul and the University keeps changing in telling me what to do! Someone please help with advice! The consulate will not answer any questions!

Did you get your medical done yet? If so, you are eligible as US citizen to apply for your work permit upon entry into Canada given that all of your documentation is in order. This is in compliance with Section 198(1)(2) of the Regulations and also under Regulation 205. If you don't have your medical, get it.
