my work permit expires end of June. Should I apply for an extension or wait until June to do it.
My 16 months would be May!

if your 16th month is May, you can wait. Apply on last week of your work permit validity.

I would apply and pay the $255 now as it is peace of mind. If you wait, you will be in implied status which is not the best. Healthcare, sin number, driver licence etc.. will be a mess. You will have to explain why you stayed beyond permit validity every time you apply for a visa, citizenship, etc.. moving forward.

I would pay the $255 and make sure everything is on track.
