Hi everyone.

My name is Volkan. I am a Turkish citizen and currently live in UK since 2005. I am writing this letter regarding a possibility to immigrate to Canada under the skilled worker scheme. As far I understand that Canada needs Restaurant and Food Service Managers and I strongly believe that I might be one of them.

Even though, I checked the www.cic.gc.ca web site and tried to contact to Canada Consulate in London I was unable to get some answers that I was looking for. I would be much appreciated it if you would be kind enough to answer my questions which will be in red and let me know whether I made the calculation correct or not so I can make an application. I attached my resume for your information.

Education-20 points

Firstly, I obtained a bachelor's degree in Tourism and Hotel Management in Anadolu University, Turkey. After three years from my graduation I also completed an 17 months Food and Beverage Management Training in The Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, USA. I had a J1 visa and I worked more than 20 different positions in the hotel including managerial positions such as Banqueting Captain, Restaurant Supervisor etc.

1. Can I count the time that I spent in USA as a trainee towards points in education or can I use this time towards points in work experience?

2. Secondly I have studied more than 14 years. I wrote the breakdown as follows. Might it be counted towards any points?

Primary School 6 years
Secondary School 3 years
High School 4 years
University 4 years
Total 17 years

3. I would like to know based on this information provided how many points can I claim? I am assuming that I can claim 21 points since I have more than 4 years experience in Hospitality Business but not as a Manager in whole.

I would be grateful if you could answer the questions above.

you should go to http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC/English/NOC/2006/Welcome.aspx

and put in your job title in the box found on the left hand side.

Then look at the main duties and look to see if you performed those duties. If you didn't, find another title that matches the duties (for now forget about the job title).

Once you find a NOC number that matches your duties, then look to see if the first digit of the NOC number starts with a 0 OR if the second digit is 1, 2, or 3. Now, you need 4 years of experience in NOC numbers that start with 0 or have second digit with 1 to 3. Then you will get 21 points. The digits as I suggest indicate that you are in skill level 0, A or B. you also need one year of continuous experience in such a job (which you have).

I don't think internships can be counted but someone else can reply on this. I could be wrong.

It looks like your Asst. rest manager and rest. manager could be 0631 and look to see if the duties of you as a supervisor is 0631 too.

Looks like you will get 20 points for education.

I wonder the below positions will be counted towards points?

Restaurant Supervisor
Food and Beverage Management Intern

I checked the web site you suggested but I could not find the exact match of these both positions. In term of responsibilites of the role, yes, restaurant supervisor should fall into 0631. But I am not sure whether the internship can be counted under 0631 even there is a ''manager trainee, restaurant'' under the 0631.

How can I be 100% sure about where these positions fall into since I need to gain two more points.

supervisor probably falls in there.

Not sure about intern. Intern is a bit different from trainee and on top of that you did the internship while studying. I think if it was part of your degree, then you cannot count it. Was it part of your degree.

Actually i dont know if you can count it if you did it during your degree. Perhaps someone else can answer that. Good luck. you could also study some french or wait for until june and apply.

The internship was after the graduation. So It was not part of the university.

perhaps that would work. check the duties on 0631 and see if it fits that. Perhaps its more like a trainee than internship.
