It's a very unique situation. You should consult with an immigration lawyer before renewing your passport or traveling.

Agree with @scylla to get professional advice but as I understand it, if you gained PR on your own merit via an economic immigration class, you are not subject to the same limitations as a PR that gained that status as a refugee.

Agreed with this. It's probably fine but this is one of those situations where it's critical to confirm.

People who become Permanent residents of Canada are landed under an Immigration Category or "Imm Cat" for short. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...ry-confirmation-permanent-residence-copr.html

The landing category would dictate if you fit into any of the restrictions associated with Convention refugees. I seem to recall CR8 as the Imm Cat for Convention Refugees landed in Canada (from an inland claim for asylum). Don't go by my memory of specific codes.

There are lots of codes like ND2 for positive H&C applicants (again, if memory serves). When the department sets targets for differing types of landings in any given year, this coding identifies the streams of immigrants and their respective volumes.

Have a look at your Imm Cat to see what category of immigrant you occupied when you became a permanent resident.

Pretty sure that you retain your protected person status until you receive citizenship. You were able to enter and stay because you applied for asylum and were granted protected status.
