Hi, I have a question to fill absence in Physical Presence calculator

My PR date: 01 Nov 2010
My Absence is : 01 Dec 2010 - 01 Apr 2013

Now when I fill form, it asked : Did you leave Canada between 2011-04-11 and 2017-04-11? YES

Please list all your absences outside Canada between 2011-04-11 and 2017-04-11 and select 'Add Absence'.

I have only one Absence, how do put my Absence? Actual or cover only relevant six-year period?

1. From: 2010-12-01 TO: 2013-04-01 (Actual)

2. From: 2011-04-11 TO: 2013-04-01 (cover only relevant six-year period)

Please advise, which one I choose 1 or 2.

Thanks

I am no expert and others can comment but my understanding only absence from 2011-04-11 is important even given you left before that given the absences in last 6 years rule so you only just meet the 4 out of 6 rule by 10 days. assuming of course that you didnt leave the country at all in the last 4 years.

Last I experimented with it, the presence calculator balked if attempts were made to enter data outside the relevant time period.

In any event, for someone who was abroad prior to and including the first date in the relevant time period, simply enter the first date for the relevant time period (2011-04-11) and briefly explain the situation in the purpose box. Perhaps simply stating, in the purpose box, "abroad since 2010-12-01." And, of course, still state purpose and countries visited in addition to the primary destination.

In my case, it allows me to enter date outside the relevant period. Thats why I am looking for preferred choice

Turns out what I suggested will generate a one day error. Not good.

The other way, entering dates outside the six relevant years, will result in a warning.

Thus, for example, if you entered a date prior to 2011/04/11 (for an application to be dated 2017/04/11), you should nonetheless have gotten the following message (in red with a pinkish red background):

An absence you have entered is partially or completely outside the relevant six-year period. Please check that the dates are correct.

I tend to lean toward a literal follow-the-instructions approach, and seeing such a warning my inclination is to back up and see how I can follow the instructions in a way that will avoid generating the warning.

Which is what generated my previous suggestion. Which, it turns out, results in a one day error.

But you are correct, you can ignore the warning and the online calculator will allow you to proceed, do the calculation, and after entering last absence then calculate and then continue to the page(s) that need to be printed to submit with application, and that printout will correctly state the number of days absent (counting only days absent during the relevant six years). And the printout pages do not carry the warning.

Since entering the actual earlier date of exit even though it is outside the relevant time period will compute, and this accurately states the date of actual exit, and it generates the accurate calculation, that easily seems to be the better approach.

You might still make a note in the "Reasons" box that the trip began before the 6 year time period.
