Hi All,

Similar questions may have been already answered, forgive me, but I couldn't find a clear one:

Simply, here are the details for my physical presence in canada for the indicated years:

Year Number of days physically present in Canada
2012 197
2013 364
2014 300
2015 245
2016 253
2017 113 (up to 24th of Apr 2017 - at which time I'm away for six days/until 30th Apr 2017)

Questions:

I will remain 21 days to complete the required total of 1460 days of physical presence within the 6 years immediately before the intended date of application for citizenship of Canada;

A) Once 21 days of physical presence are completed in Canada, would I be eligible to apply for citizenship (at around the end of May 2017)?

B) Or do I need to complete a full 183 days in 2017 before becoming eligible to apply?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,'
Santana

Use the online physical presence calculator. It will clearly and accurately show results for both calculations (as long as the applicant enters all dates accurately). That is, the calculator will give you a clear and reliable result as to both the minimum 1460 days total within six years, and as to the 183 days per year for at least four of the six years.

There really is no alternative. Use the online calculator.

In any event, for purposes of meeting the 183-days-times-4-years requirement, there is no need to wait until you have been present 183 days in 2017, since you were present more than 183 days in five of the relevant six years (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016), when the 183 days per year requirement only needs to be met in four years.

It appears you are already past the 1460 day threshold. Not by much. And this is assuming 113 days is based on "up to 24th of April." (I get a total of 1466 to date, 1472 as of April 24, again assuming total in Canada is 113 for 2017 as of April 24).)

But it would be foolish to apply without a good margin over the minimum.

Moreover, I am guessing that your references to late May means your accounting for 2017, that your days total in Canada for 2017 is 113 as of April 24, is off. Got to get your dates absolutely accurate. Absolutely accurate. (This means, for example, that the applicant needs to accurately report the date of actual exit from Canada and not use the date on a stamp indicating date of entry into another country.) Sure, IRCC does not punish applicants for an isolated, minor mistake, but to avoid problematic mistakes the applicant really needs to make a concerted effort to be absolutely accurate.

In any event, as to applying with a margin, in particular you have extended absences in the previous two years. In this scenario it is particularly important to wait until you have a good margin over the minimum. In any scenario it is prudent to have a significant margin, at least two to four weeks. But with the extended absences for the last couple years, my sense is that a margin of at least a couple months over the minimum would be a good idea.

Very, very much appreciated.

Given the numerous entries and exits, I may resort to using the pdf version of time calculation, seems easier to use.
I've also just received my PRC for this period, accurate dates were used backed by copies of all relevant travel documents, still fresh, should help.

Again, many thanks for your detailed response.
Santana.
