Hi, I am an student at a short career college slated to finish in January. It was an 8 month course with job placement at the end. When I enrolled I was assured that the school/program would qualify me for a Post Graduate Work Permit. Now I am learning that is does NOT. Do I still have any options??

See if you can enroll into another course or college or univ which gives you PGWP. But make sure to do it before graduating. That means applying for another SP.

That's not an option. I can't afford that
Well then you can not get a PGWP or open work permit. You then have to find a Canadian employer who cannot hire a Canadian/PR. That employer has to pay $1k and apply for a LMIA and show why hiring you will grow their business. Few employers go through the process because of the the time and money. Then if employer gets a LMIA, you apply for a closed work permit. It may be refused if you aren’t qualified. This takes months too.

Problem is my program ends at the end of November. I won't be able to transfer anywhere, I would just have to start from scratch

I agree but look at the possibilities of another program. You have made one mistake of not checking before starting the study. I suggest you go through another one. Why waste this opportunity to earn more in Canada? Look at all the future earning potential and look at the current expenses! Think about it. If not this route then what are your thoughts? Maybe there is something we dont know..

Oh, I definitely checked and was assured that it was done. However, this was in 2019, I was supposed to start in mid 2020, but....And so now it seems their DLI status seems to have changed...not sure what happened, whether its because the majority of the course has been online

DLIs don't just change because of moving online. A school has to lose status after an investigation. What is the school?

What school and program is this? Are you 100% sure you don't qualify for a PGWP?

If you don't have the funds to take another full program at a qualifying school, then your only option for working is to find an employer who is willing to go through the LMIA process and give you a job offer so that you can qualify for a closed work permit.

Yeah...that's what I thought.

To be perfectly honest I think I may have been mis-advised. The admissions officer that I dealt with in the beginning (who has since left) also gave me incorrect information about some financial questions as well. I only found out because my admission was delayed because of the pandemic. So....at this point I'm not sure if it was my mistake or his. SMH

There is a DLI database and a quick check before your studies started would have told you. Since you won't name the school will assume you will not get PGWP. So option is study at DLI or get LMIA/closed work permit.

I'm not aware of any career colleges changing status as it relates to PGWPs over the last few years. (Career colleges generally do not qualify for PGWPs.) I expect this school / program did not qualify for a PGWP back in 2019 either.

Anyway, what's done is done. You can't go back in time. At this point it really doesn't matter what went wrong.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do next. Tough situation.

Thank you for your support....how is naming the school going to change my situation??
