is it possible to get your pet in Canada before landing? I am considering moving to the NY area from California to be closer to my DH in Kitchener. I am a US citizen so I can visit him for 6 months at a time, but what would I do with my cat? The most natural thing for me to do is to take my cat with me to Canada. Is it possible to do this before I land?

I would appreciate any comments.

I brought my cat (from the US) over years before even apply for PR when I was dating my husband. I was spending more time with him in Canada than I was in the states to it made sense for me to bring my cat over to his place. So that it didn't raise any red flags I brought her on a long weekend and didn't mention that she would be staying when I went back to the US. I simply said since it was a long weekend which I was planning on spending entirely in Canada I decided to bring her with me. I had researched before my trip and knew I had to show she had her rabies shots so I got that from the vet before we left. But when I entered Canada (by car) the officer could have cared less about my cat and didn't even want to see the rabies paperwork and let us both enter Canada.

Another side note. We now have a dog that my husband takes over to work on occasion (we live in Windsor, work in Detroit) and rarely is he asked for the dogs paperwork on either side of the border.

So to finish my thought in my experience I wouldn't see why you couldn't bring your cat, esp. with the proof of rabies shots but my only concern would be if they suspected you of coming to Canada to "live" rather than just "visit."

Thank you for all your replies. We are now thinking that my husband (Canadian citizen) may bring in my cat from the US instead of me. That might work too?

I think that would be a good way to do it just so it doesn't look like you are coming to "live" in Canada...

Yeah, and I may not fly with him - I am not sure what he should say about the cat though.... Any thoughts, anybody?
