Permanent residency extension

Hello - I received my PR status in August 2021 and need to extend it now because I am just not yet fulfilling the requirements to apply for a Canadian Citizenship. I am at approximately 1040 of the needed 1095 days. I tried to login to the portal where I applied for my PR originally but somehow the login doesn't work. Is this normal? I have also tried to setup a new portal account but that also doesn't work. Any ideas? My PR expires in less than 4 months so I am getting a little desperate here. PR cannot expire, only a PR card, you don't need it to be valid to apply for citizenship.

I presume there's a way to recover your previous password or whatever but don't know.

As noted, while you don't need to renew your PR card (your PR status does not expire and the PR card not needed to apply for citizenship), it is still a good idea to have a valid PR card.

I actually managed to login to a new password, I can't see my initial application for PR in there but managed to initiate an application to renew my PR card (from IMM5444, I hope that's the right one?) and it refers to my UCI number so I assume that should be sufficient to connect things?

Sounds like it to me, I've not been in this situation.

Correct - or at least to board a plane TO Canada, you don't need one to leave, and entry by land border/private vehicle can be done without a valid PR card.
