passport request for accompanying dependants....

hi guys, my husband came home to an email from CIC requesting copies of his kids' passports. they are asking for copies of actual passports book but, my stepkids only have the US passport cards. the only difference we knew of when we got the cards was that the cards are only good for land travel over the border (the only way my family travels to me) & they were cheaper...seemed like a no-brainer to us at the time. well, the passport request says cards aren't good enough for CIC. they've given us until 11/23 to send in the copies of the passport books, but even with paying extra for expedited passport processing there's no way we could have them before the deadline. any suggestions on what to do? thanks in advance!

first, check to see if there is an expedited service center near you. they are separate from the visa passport processing services, and can issue passports quicker than the expedited service. call and ask them if they can comply with the request. generally, they are meant to help people who need to travel within 2 weeks, so they may be willing to help if you show them the letter.

second, if you live in a city that has a us embassy, see if you can get an appointment and they may be able to issue visas within 2 weeks as well. i know people who have gotten passports in 24 hours going to an embassy because of immediate travel. i would imagine needing to submit passports for immigration purposes would be a legit reason for help.

third, if neither are an option, just write to the visa office that you need additional time, and you have applied for the passports. show them the proof, as well as the posted processing time. It's been reported if you provide them with information about you doing the work to comply with their request, they will allow for an extension.

thank you. looks like we don't have much of choice but to explain the situation and hope they give us a little more time to send in the passport copies whenever we get them.

i wonder should we consider this a regular passport request or just a second additional documents request? we had one in July for updated immigration pictures of the kids when our application changed to "in process".

if they are asking for copies of passports, then generally for ottawa that is the PPR. They obviously can't process the visa with the copies they were sent.
