I am seeing a lot of people ask about their passports. So I was wondering when your on your final stage of your PR application do they need your passport from your country? My husband recieved his passport back but it was expired and all they are asking us for is to re-do his medical. Will they ask us for the renew passport later?

He will require a valid passport before they issue the COPR.

COPR is Confirmation of Permanent Residence

It's a form every PR gets, it's completed the day the applicant lands - becomes a PR.

Exactly. The visa is affixed to your passport (it's a sticker) and the COPR is a set of papers which you take with you to the border. The officer there will process everything, have you sign the COPR, and then give you the bottom copy as your proof of PR.

If he has landed as a Permanent Resident he no longer needs visas. He has right of entry as a PR.

My husband is already landed. He has been here for six years. Does he still need the renew visa?

Probably needs to renew his PR card if he hasn't already.

I'm lost. You said he landed, which means he got his PR. Did you just mean that he has arrived in Canada?

If he is applying for PR but has not received it, then yes, he will need a valid passport for them to affix the visa and for him to use to enter Canada when he officially lands as a PR. This means that he has to renew it if it has expired.

No he doesn't have a PR card. We started our PR application in Canada. It's almost final we are just waiting for them to get his medical again. But, he got his passport back; however, it is expired. Does he need to renew it for his PR.

if PR is valid for 5 years, is it possible to apply for citizenship instead of renewing it?

Sure. Unlike in the U.S.A., there is no legal requirement to have a PR card at all. The only time you really have to have one is for commercial international travel.

If you apply for citizenship as soon as you are eligible, and have no complicating factors, you will usually become a Canadian citizen before your first PR card expires anyway.
