I understand the issue you are facing. The cost for a family of 4 for 4 passports is over $400 and that can be a lot of money. If the kids are the first generation offspring (I couldnt tell from the post) then you dont need a passport for them because you arent sponsoring them for permanent residency. You just need to get their citizenship certificate, and they dont even need that to cross the border. The only person who needs the full passport is the person being sponsored.

The kids are born to myself being born in the USA and my husband being born in Canada to a USA and Canadian. The kids were born in the USA in June of 2007.

We didn't think we'd go this route-as the timeline on that paperwork was longer than PR according to the timeline.

This is the information I received from the consulate in Detroit when I spoke to them about my daughters citizenship certificate application. She can cross with a valid passport as long as one of her parents (me) is a CDN citizen. I would need permission from both custodial parents as well as a valid US passport (she is US Citizen) - I have applied for her Citizenship Certificate but dont think I will get it before we leave. Because she is a Citizen by my status she is ineligible to be sponsored or to obtain a visa because she is by birth to a Cdn citizen, a Cdn Citizen herself. Therefore she will cross with her Canadian mother and US father and be allowed in because of my Canadian Citizenship. If traveling by car, a passport card will get you across - but make sure you have birth certificates also, for the Cdn parent and the kids. I believe that is what Detroit told me. (they were awesome bTW)

So, your daughter doesn't require a medical either then? and is essentially just 'visiting' / exempt.

No, my daughter didnt require a medical and wasnt included in the sponsorship papers. A first generation child of a Canadian Citizen IS a Canadian Citizen. My brother experienced this when he tried to obtain a visa for his China born daughter - he is a CDN Cit. Canada refused to issue a visa for her (Chinese citz. need visa to come to Canada) because by birth to my brother she is Cdn.

My daughter isnt even visiting from my understanding , because I am bringing her across border with full permission from my husband (US citz).

Yeah, we definitely knew that they were by birth Canadians. Like I said, the hiccup for us was the timing of it all and not realizing that they wouldn't question (we would land as a family, husband (Canadian) myself and the kids.

This presents a small issue for health care, we were looking at 3 months without when we landed - potentially longer while we wait for the certificate then though.

What if anything, did the CIC say about how it'll appear for her on your application then?
Since everyone needs a medical - regardless of their settling with you...

And you have to list your children, right?

Yes they do have to be metioned even if they are not being sponsored.their names place of birth and citizenship.You dont name them in the undertakings just in the space that says all childre dependant on you including other previous relationships.

I don't get how they end up being OK to not have medicals, I guess, since they aren't official Canadians at that point.

basically it ID because they are Canadian citz. By birth to you. You won't apply for citizenship for them, just apply for their certificate of citizenship. I mailed my daughters out today. It included my birth certificate showing I was born in Cda which makes her eligible for the certificate.

exactly Heather they are born to a canadian they are actually dual citizen but yes all you have to do is apply for her citizen certificate.Im not sure about the medical but if you do the ap for her certificate im sure it will tell you on there if she needs a medical.

It's my husband who isn't convinced this is the way it works - I don't see an issue with it, and the CIC is closed today being holiday - so I can't ask them so hubby will get it from 'the source'... but in reading the application paperwork and guide it states dependant children of the sponsor - to me, more indicating from previous relationships - not children you have together - not that they aren't meant to be listed, but more that the situation is unique....
in further reading I've found this (see below ) which I think will pacifiy my husbands uncertainty.

I emailed the consulate in Detroit and they phoned me back. They were incredibly helpful. I explained that I would not have the Cit Cert in time for when we cross the border an was told that I would need her pp, birth cert showing parents and then either we both had to be there or notarized proof of permission from spouse. They also said I (the cdn) needed to be with her at the crossing bc she is cit bc of my birth. Like I said in an earlier post my brother faced the same situation with his daughter as Canada won't issue her a visa bc she is a citizen by first decent.

Thanks.... perhaps I will try to email them and maybe get lucky to have them call me back tomorrow.

I plan to show that to my husband tonight - the info in the application that says you can't/won't/isn't allowed... and I think he'll be more at ease.

We'd be in a mighty pickle if something came up / derailed.
