Hi everyone,

I need some advice regarding my PGWP eligibility. In my 2nd semester, I originally registered for 5 courses, but I received two transfer credits — one from my previous studies in India and one from my earlier program at Seneca (which I dropped after completing semesters 1 and 2). Because of these transfer credits, my course load automatically dropped to 3 courses, which made me part-time without me realizing it.

I continued working part-time that semester because I believed I was still considered full-time. I never intentionally dropped any course, and an immigration officer had advised me not to take any academic breaks, so I completed all 4 semesters continuously.

I’m now preparing to apply for my PGWP and I’m worried about whether being part-time only because of transfer credits, and working during that time, might cause any issues.

If anyone has experience or insight on how IRCC views this situation, I would really appreciate your guidance. Thanks!

What does your transcript say for completing the program? To be eligible for PGWP you can only be part time the last semester.

This is my final semester, and I am scheduled to graduate in December. After transitioning to part-time status, I consulted with an immigration officer who advised me against taking a break. Consequently, I completed my entire program consecutively without any semester breaks. I want to confirm that I will not encounter any repercussions for failing to disclose my part-time employment during my time as a part-time student to an immigration officer. It was not my intention to work while enrolled as a part-time student; the situation arose inadvertently.

But what about going to school part time. Will your transcript show that you were a part time student?

There’s nothing written on my transcript that says I was part-time. It only shows the courses I was enrolled in during each semester. In my case, for the Fall semester, it shows that I was enrolled in 3 courses, but it doesn’t mention anything about “part-time” status.

Being enrolled in 3 courses or less is typically part-time. It often isn’t declared as part-time on the transcript because it doesn’t matter for most students. IRCC is familiar with transcripts and will be able to see you are part-time.
