Outside Canada, current PR expires in 3 months, new one is already issued

Hi

First and foremost, I am sorry, I did search the forum, and I don't seem to get the answer I need.

My girlfriend is in Japan, her current PR card expires in Jan-19, but surprisingly her new PR card was already mailed to her home address in Mississauga ( she applied her PR card renewal a month ago, thinking that it would probably take 3 month to get the new card).

So can she come back with the current PR card? Or must she apply the PRTD? CIC website only has the answer for situation where one is outside Canada and PR card EXPIRED....

She should be able to use her current PR card until is expired.
