You can make an appointment at your local cic office to complete your landing or you can travel to the nearest border and request to "flag pole" for the purpose of landing. Flag pole is a non-technical term for crossing over to the Canadian side of the border to get to the customs and immigration offices.

Hi thank you so much AllisonVSC for the info. If i can arrange to CIC the things i need to complete the landing i will definitely choose that! I should probably call CIC office just to make sure.

Some offices have long waits for landing appointments, so you might consider calling a few nearby to find out the wait times.

Hi all,

I hope somone will be able to help me out and I am sorry if this question is super repetitive and been asked before. I am a british citizen and my husband is a canadian citizen. I have been living in canad afor the last 3 years on a PGWP and it is coming up for expiry and so I am now applying for PR. IT seems that the processing times for outland applicants is MUCH faster, so maybe I have been looking into the wrong forms! Whcih forms do I have to fill in to apply to the London office as an outland applicant? Just to confirm, I saw that somoen mentioned that I can still remain here in Canda but apply to the outland office? I assume I would just have to change my status to visitor once my permit expires?

All help would be greatly appreciated and any advice from those that have gone through this process would help!

The term "inland" and "outland" causes great confusion. While there are nuances to the choice (you can get an open work permit once inland sponsorship has been approved, but you cannot do so with outland sponsorship) for most people the issue is one of "which one is fastest". Note that if you do file outland, there is the risk that if they call you for an interview (unlikely, but possible) you will have to travel to London for that interview.

To figure this out, go look at the current wait time. There are two times to consider: the time to process the sponsorship application (CPC-V for inland and CPC-M for outland) and then the time to process the PR application (inland means it is done inside Canada at one of various offices, outland means it is done outside Canada at an Embassy, Consulate or High Commission.)

For example, the current time for CPC-V (inland) is approximately 11 months for the sponsorship application. Inland applications then require 8 months to complete 80%. So estimated total time is 19 months.

The current time for CPC-M (outland) is 54 days for the sponsorship application (so let's call it 2 months). CHC London says they complete 80% of applications within 7 months. So estimated total time is 9 months. (I believe that if you have long-term status in Canada you can also choose to process through Buffalo, but Buffalo lists an 80% time of 11 months, so that's not worth considering here.)

Note: this is from the "Check Application Processing Times" link on the CIC website.

Bottom line is you can pick the one that is better for you.

Thank you for that information! SO lets say I apply to the London office. My work permit expires in May, is that ok? I would simply change my status to visitor once it has expired? And then begin the waiting game?

Sorry I did not see this until today. I don't know if you still need this but a quick Google search found this. Call the number. If they don't do landings ask them for a number to an office that does.

hi,

If you can wait for appointment, local CIC might be an option for you. I'm not too sure though if its work to visitor visa because i was in Canada for a work permit. but I chose to cross the border anyways, and did the flag-poling not a problem.

Yes definitley apply outland via London. You should check out the London spousal outland thread - very useful and there's a spreadsheet you can add yourself to and track your timelines versus others. Very helpful. I've just had confirmation my COPR is in the mail, so it has taken a little over 5 months - would have been under if not for a hiccup with the post!

Sorry I can't answer the question about what you do when your work permit expires - I'm assuming that you can transfer to a visitor visa, but how you go about doing that I don't know.

For the forms you need go to CIC.gc.ca and select 'Find application form or guide' from the 'I need to' menu on the right. Click 'Sponsor your family' under the applying from outside Canada list, and that's the set you need. It matters not that you are living in Canada and applying outland.

Hello,

I have a question: I applied outland in my home country (Brazil), but with my former adress in my residence country (France) and I haven't lived in my home country for many years. I am now in Canada with a student permit.

Do I need to contact them in order to change my adress to my new adress in Canada?

If not, where do you think I'll have to send my passport?

Thanks in advance for your answer!
