Hello again!

How mandatory is the Option C print out? Here is the issue.

I've been mainly living in Guatemala with my husband for the past 2 years, with some time in Canada scattered here and there. I did file taxes for 2015 as I was employed for a couple of months in 2015 during one of our Canada visits. My problem is that I can't access CRA's "My Account" thing online because I can't answer any of their security questions that they need to send me a new access code. It's complicated, but basically all my official stuff is tucked away somewhere in my Dad's basement in Canada.

Long story short, they can send me a copy of the Option C thing to my address is Canada, but that can take almost 2 weeks she told me. Then I would get someone to get my mail, scan the Option C and email it to me...is that acceptable or do I absolutely need the original?

And no I can't get it mailed to Guatemala because the mail system is terrible and I will get it next year, haha!

In lieu of that document I do have a ROE from that job in 2015 that I can submit..

Maybe I am over thinking this.. help lol

We just got our security code on the email. You will have to create another CRA account and apply for the code. It will take
5 to 10 days for you to receive it and then you just need to get someone you trust who lives in Canada to send you the code through facebook or in an email.

Our code only took 6 days for us to get it in the mail.

And to answer your question. The option C is mandatory, if you don't send it they might send your application back to you or even refuse it.

Thank you for your answer!

I spent some time on the phone yesterday with Revenue Canada and the only option I have right now is to get the document mailed to my address in Canada and someone will scan it for me and email it to me. I hope that will be acceptable for CIC.

You can do it yourself. Just create another CRA account and in less than 10 days
the security code will go to your mail in Canada and someone you trust can send you the code and then you use it
to sign in and once you sign in you will be able to print out the Option C, the T-4 and the T4 E.

And your notice of assessment as well..

I will wait until I get the documents in the mail and get a scan. I've already made the request.

I don't think the Option C thing is as mandatory as you make it sound. For someone who lives mostly overseas and has no income in Canada, it could be quite possible that they don't have that document to show. It does say on the Document Checklist "If you do not provide this printout, provide an explanation on a separate sheet of paper" .. So not an outright refusal like you make it sound.

The Option C is not required anymore. IRCC asks for the NOA instead.

The exemption from providing either really only applies to those who haven't been resident in Canada for years and so haven't filed taxes in years, or to those who are new to Canada and have never filed taxes.

Oh shoot I just noticed that.. I had the old version of the document checklist.. With my request to CRA for the Option C print out, will they also send the NOA or should I phone them again?

Option C print is just a more detailed copy of your NOA. Both work fine. If you have your Option C, you can use that without any problems.

Oh thank you so much for the clarification! I am assuming that a scanned, emailed and printed copy is ok? Getting an original would be a pain in the butt at this point...

I didn't submit an NoA or Option C with our application. I did submit T4s, proof of present and future ongoing employment, and a simple explaination of how I calculated net income and that I would submit NoA and Option C when it became available.

I didn't submit those until a week ago (CRA...). They began background checks already for us (no return or refusal).

My wife printed her Option C from the CRA website. That's what most do, if you can access the CRA website. Otherwise, I'm sure a scanned copy won't appear too different.
