Open Work Permit for Spouse. Please help!!!

Hi Friends,

I am planning to apply for an open work permit as my spouse has a valid study permit. Can someone please brief me about the process and the documents required?
Seniors or those who have gone through this process, please help.

In some cases, work permits are not job-specific. That means no job offer or authorization from Employment and Social Development Canada (known as a Labour Market Opinion, or LMO) is needed. These types of permits are known as open work permits.

Are there different applications for regular and open work permits?
No, you can use the same application form for either type of work permit.
If you apply for an open work permit, you can leave questions 2 to 6 of the “Details of intended work in Canada” section blank.

I have an approved study permit. I will be leaving in the month of September for my course.

I want to know if my husband can apply for an Open Work Permit from India? Or should he first apply for a visitor visa and then once he is in Canada, he must apply for an OWP??

Please help guys.

ys he can apply for open work permit.....just dont forget to add ur study permit visa etc documents even though they may not be in the check list. also when u show funds u should have funds to support u both in canada. I believe funds is the most important factor for spousal open work permits along side ur husbands profile.

he can apply for spousal open work permit or visitors visa and then work permit in canada what ever he wants, u will have to pay application fees twice if u apply for visitors visa first and then open work permit in canada.

I am curious to know the source of your information. I am a little confused because I cannot find any information on how to apply for a open work permit from India.

Please note that I started navigating through the below link while searching for the required documents for m husband's open work permit.

In this page it is mentioned that this application can be used if you want to:

extend your stay,
change the conditions of your stay,
change your type of temporary status or
correct problems with your status.

Currently my husband is in India. So, I dont think any of the above case is applicable to him. Am I missing something here? Please help mead.

there is no special spousal work permit application u have to use general work permit application with ur study permit etc.

Hi All,

If the work permit for spouse is applied from within Canada (i.e. if my husband comes on a visit and then applies from within Canada), how much time does it take to get the work permit?

Also does he have to stay in Canada till he receives his work permit or can he travel to other countries once the application has been filed

mead, I am from India. Applied at Hyderabad VFS today. Fingers crossed.

Did you apply through VFS? which state?
And thats awesome to know that your wife got her visa in 4 days... Did she apply this year?

Hi mead,

My husband applied for spouse open work permit as I am a student now...
He applied on July 15th 2014. He received his medical request on 26th Aug 2014 and he got the medical done on 28th Aug 2014.
He received an email today at 7:00PM IST from VAC which mentions that your processed passport has been courier.
There is no email from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Is this bad?
Really worried.

Please do let me know the outcome when you get your husband's passport.

Additionally can you let me know what forms did you fill for your husband's OWP. (Work permit form, family information form or any other)
Can you please also tell me documents proofs you addded to your file for OWP.
