My spouse will be landing in Canada in the coming months. Long story short, she had previously immigrated on her own before we knew one another (more than 12 years ago), and did not remain or stay any significant period of time in Canada. (Her case is in order - she renounced her PR status years ago and the new PR / spousal sponsorship is done.
I believe she would have received a SIN at that time but effectively never used it (we are checking to see if we still have it).
Should we plan on her applying for a new SIN number on arrival, unconnected to the old one? Do old ones get cancelled? Would it have been cancelled or somehow marked as not valid for work when she renounced her previous PR status? Or would we need to 'activate' it somehow?
Is there some way to find out the old SIN number if we cannot find it? She almost certainly does not have the SIN card.
This may be over-thinking it since in reality, the old one would never have been 'used' in any meaningful sense. (We will be applying for sin numbers for our children on arrival anyway, so not worried about the extra time on arrival - would just like to avoid any bureaucratic issues down the road.
