NOC riddled little Inferno

Good Afternoon everyone

I'm in the pool right now, sitting at 445, CEC inland applicant, IELTS maxed out, trying to look into all my possibilities.

My problem is that my job description is...tricky... and I was wondering if I could get some feedback.

I work in the generator maintenance business. We perform maintenance to generator systems at condos, businesses (both public owned and private), universities, etc. We do all kinds of repairs, build fuel systems, quote electrical components, install new generators and so on.

I work at the office and my main title is "Estimator".

While I do a little bit of the duties listed in NOC 2234 (Estimators - Construction) as we install generators, and fuel systems, I don't know if I can qualify as a Construction estimator. Most of the time my duties are a mix between 6221 (Technical Sales Specialists) and 1241 (Administrative Assistants).

I do perform all of the duties below to bigger or lesser extent:

(From 1241)
  • Prepare, key in, edit and proofread correspondence, invoices, presentations, brochures, publications, reports and related material from machine dictation and handwritten copy
  • Open and distribute incoming regular and electronic mail and other material and co-ordinate the flow of information internally and with other departments and organizations
  • Order office supplies and maintain inventory
  • Answer telephone and electronic enquiries and relay telephone calls and messages
  • Set up and maintain manual and computerized information filing systems
  • Determine and establish office procedures
  • Record and prepare minutes of meetings
  • May supervise and train office staff in procedures and in use of current software.
  • May organize conferences
(From 6221)
  • Maintain and grow sales relationships with existing clients
  • Identify and solicit potential clients
  • Assess clients' needs, recommend or assist in the selection of appropriate goods or services, and negotiate prices or other sales terms
  • Develop sales presentations, proposals, or other materials to illustrate benefits from use of good or service
  • Estimate costs of installing and maintaining equipment or service
  • Prepare and administer sales contracts and maintain customer records
  • Troubleshoot technical problems related to equipment
  • May supervise the activities of other technical staff and sales specialists.
  • May offer training in the operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Consult with clients after sale to resolve problems and to provide ongoing support
(From 2234)
  • Prepare estimates of probable costs of materials, labour and equipment for construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings and specifications
  • Advise on tendering procedures, examine and analyze tenders, recommend tender awards and conduct negotiations
  • Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors

Now for the questions -

1 - What is the safest NOC to put on my application? Reminding that I'm applying through CEC and my previous education do not really match what I do at my job (I'm quick on the uptake though).

2 - My employer likes me quite a bit and would be willing to apply for LMIA to help me raise the score/keep me, but realistically what are the chances of getting a LMIA with one of the aforementioned NOCs?

3- My PGWP expires december, my wife is completing her masters in canada right now and her course ends in May 2020, so I'm hoping I can apply for an extension for my work permit as spouse and keep working on my current job. Is that possible? If so when is the best time to apply?

Thank you for your attention!

Now for the questions -

The "safest" is the one the best corresponds to your job. It's not just about the job duties and responsibilities, but the lead statement, which usually references the type of company/organization, and who the customers/clients are...

This is your lead statement: "I work in the generator maintenance business. We perform maintenance to generator systems at condos, businesses (both public owned and private), universities, etc. We do all kinds of repairs, build fuel systems, quote electrical components, install new generators and so on."

There is only one NOC that corresponds to that at the level of the lead statement, that is NOC 6221.

2 - My employer likes me quite a bit and would be willing to apply for LMIA to help me raise the score/keep me, but realistically what are the chances of getting a LMIA with one of the aforementioned NOCs?

It all depends whether or not he could hire a Canadian to do the job.

3- My PGWP expires december, my wife is completing her masters in canada right now and her course ends in May 2020, so I'm hoping I can apply for an extension for my work permit as spouse and keep working on my current job. Is that possible? If so when is the best time to apply?

If you get your ITA and eAPR submitted, you would be eligible to apply for a bridging open work permit within 4 months of the expiry date of your current permit (e.g. anytime between September-December 2019) - that will give you at least a year.

Thank you for the answers jes! just a couple of things -

1- What worries me about 6221 is the definitions of "technical" and "wholesale". I want to make sure it matches with what CIC expects of the terms. Do you think it fits my lead description?

Also I do a LOT of office administrative work as well (it's not a very big company and I have a good amount of experience controlling the flow of assignments and information so I do end embracing this part of the job) and that's why I have this doubt.

2- I understand your statement, but do you (or anyone else) have any experience with people getting LMIA as 6221 for example? I could not get any data and don't want my employer to waste the money if there's no chance...

3- Thank you about the info on the Bridging work permit, hopefully it will be useful.... but my question is - Me and my wife married recently, I am on a PGWP at the moment, she is on a Study permit. We met in Canada. I was wondering if I can apply for a Spousal Work permit to extend my stay a little longer so I can complete two full years of work (in the worst case scenario I do not get a ITA until then).

Yes, otherwise I would not have suggested it was the best NOC for your position (as you have described it).

Wholesale = customers/clients are other businesses/companies (not the general public, which would be retail).

Also I do a LOT of office administrative work as well (it's not a very big company and I have a good amount of experience controlling the flow of assignments and information so I do end embracing this part of the job) and that's why I have this doubt.

Everyone does a lot of admin stuff. But if that were your primary function, I'm sure you would not have the job title of "Estimator".

2- I understand your statement, but do you (or anyone else) have any experience with people getting LMIA as 6221 for example? I could not get any data and don't want my employer to waste the money if there's no chance...

It will depend quite a bit on where you are located. But no, I can't give you much beyond that.

3- Thank you about the info on the Bridging work permit, hopefully it will be useful.... but my question is - Me and my wife married recently, I am on a PGWP at the moment, she is on a Study permit. The tricky part is you said she will graduate in May and your PGWP doesn't expire until December. SOWPs cannot be issued for longer than the permit on which it is based ( your wife's study permit), and I belive have a minimum time of 6 months... so unless your wife's study permit goes a bit beyond May, and/or you apply well before your PGWP expires, you may have some issues. But there's no other reason why you could not apply to change/extend your work permit. I would suggest applying in September if that's the route you want to take. Your wife's graduation will help with the points, if the LMIA doesn't work out...
