If need to upgrade your basic Microsoft office and internet naviagation skills pls do it before you leave naija because it will cost you more when you get here and I dont know of a job you will get over here without encountering a form of programmed application or the other.

If you are an accountant start researching about CGA or CMA of the province you are destined or better still start ACCA in naija and when you get here they can convert ur ACCA to their accounting designation over here and give you your recognition .. Pls ICAN is not worthy on this matter ooo

If you studied sciences pls update and upgrade yourself or betterstill if you are a fresh grad enrol in an internship program or offer your services to learn at a company that will add value to you. it is very very tough when you have Nigerian qualifications.

For those that studied history, intl relations, english and other courses that are not professional in nature now is the time for you to change course do alot of research into how you can fit into the system and get canadian qualifications.
Also start looking at intl certifications like ACCA,CBAP,ITIL, PMP,CISA, CISSP and so on as it applies in your field.

From all that I have noticed abroad , you must have good customer service skills. i would say its from IMPORTANT to PARAMOUNT


To Nigerians being coded it happens but what can you do .. As for me I am always open to help in whatever form or area I can ...

Good thing is that credential evaluation is part of the requirements of the FSW2013. There are about 2 other organizations designated by CIC to evaluate foreing educational criteria. check for more details at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/assessment.asp

My take on this issue of being successful in this our journey to Canada is this:Some occupations are regulated while others are not, I think we need to do a lot on the internet concerning this.Checking the CIC website, Working in Canada tools etc and see the requirements for your occupation.If yours is regulated i.e needing Licensing to practice,check out what you can do to get licensed while waiting for MR,PPR etc...this is a way to kill the tension created by the long waiting time.I think if we take a look at this critically, it will do u us some good and prepare us for that glorious Life in Canada...this is just my view,please more insights

Well, my take about the Canada employment system that's causing immigrants concerns is mainly based on the Canadian Government setting very high-standards for the sector. They don't want the least but the best. Before you can get a high-profile job; they want to know your employability and want to be sure if you can truly handle the Canada-work-situation based on your work experience. That's why Canadian references are always requested for/being giving low-level security job no matter your foreign experience/asking to start with an entry level position are all ways to confirm. Also, the quality of your certification/education can't be ascertained by employers/educational institutions/hiring organisations except through international assessment. All the above would help highlight your work-experience, skills, learning ability, strengths, employability in clear and understandable terms for whom-ever it may concern in Canada.

So from my little experience and some research done so far, I'll advise to start our preparations in advance i.e. prior to our landing and set our minds to it:

1.)
Get all locally obtained post-secondary Certificates accredited right now while you are preparing to land. It'll normally comes-in handy, as it will be requested for by most employers/educational institutions for entry level positions/if you want to further in your education. Also be prepared to hear that you will require retraining in Canada.
Foreign credential recognition continues to be a major hurdle for highly qualified immigrants trying to work in their field. There are many credentials services(you can consider WES: www.wes.org / ICAS: www.icascanada.ca) and various costs involved so start with your relevant licensing/regulatory associations for initial information.

There are some people on this forum that got jobs within weeks or even days before landing in Canada without the almighty Canadian experience. Stay positive, do your due diligence in terms of adjusting your Resume and Cover-letter to Canadian format, network and you might be one of the lucky ones.

Apply with your Canadian format Resume at job sites and banks, like workopolis.ca(it's the best, in my opinion as it's popular & has tonnes of

Have a specified Resume for a specified profession on a dedicated hiring site so you don't mess it up! and please don't spam! as this could cause disqualifications even in jobs you're qualified for.

skills which include proficiencies such as communication skills, conflict resolution and negotiation, personal effectiveness, creative problem solving, strategic thinking, friendliness, team building, being charismatic,
influencing skills and selling skills, to name a few. These could play a deciding factor whether we'll easily and quickly blend in/cope with the work situation in Canada. The above speaks a lot of volume about our employability.

What I have read tells me it is really tough to find jobs without Canadian Education and Canadian Experience. But there are many organisations that work with immigrants to reduce the pain. Once we have known what to expect, how to over-come these challenges and are willing to take jobs that come our way irrespective of profile and salary, we will be in better shape to handle the initial troubles related to immigrating to Canada.
