My Canadian wife is pregnant, and we are currently residing in the UK waiting for my PR (as I am UK citizen) to come through.

We will almost certainly have the birth in the UK as are aware of the pregnancy related costs due to not getting OHIP in time.

My question is will the new born (will be 2 months old or so by the time we are looking to move) have coverage or will it also need it's own private insurance for ON? If so, is there a particular private insurer to use, or will they all cover new borns?

Contact OHIP. Someone on the forum has previously stated that OHIP makes exceptions for coverage for newborns but I've never found anything on the website about it.

There is no such rule on their website, so it may be on a case by case basis or dependent on the OHIP worker you happen to talk to. I wouldn't count on this, so would definitely plan ahead with travel emergency medical insurance for 3 months.

Of course any regular check-ups, immunizations, etc after they arrive for 3 months, will not be covered by private travel insurance. Only for emergencies. If I recall, there were regular check-ups scheduled at 2 and 4 months, with several immunizations at each one. http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/programs/immunization/static/immunization_tool.html#2-4mths

I would talk to a Canadian insurance broker to get options on good policies that cover babies.
