Hi everyone, I thought I would bring this question to you since every piece of information I have gotten has been from you darlings! ;D

I got an email about a job, I made sure to tell them I was still the US and asked them to reconsider. She replies asking where and when I am moving and when can we set up an interview. What should I say about the when parts? I have tried being straight forward with other enployers saying "when the work permit paper work comes threw." But I get ignored after that....so how should I word it to be in my favor?

Well - first of all, "threw" is incorrect. You should be using "through".

I was just typing fast in hopes I would get a quick reply that could help me... what was in quotes isn't literally what I respond to them with just an about statement.....

I know what you mean but it is better to be upfront since you can't really interview before you get your paperwork done.

What is your status right now?

Have you applied for PR and are waiting to be approved?

Do you need an employer to offer you a job and an approved LMO so that you can get a work permit?

Something else?

This may be something I over looked so I am confused now! Why won't I be able to interview before my paper work gets done? I was under the impression that with NAFTA and temporary foreign worker permit you needed a job offer first before you can submit paper work. Is there another work permit I can apply for without a job offer that I can then have on hand at an interview?

My status really is nothing yet. I am a CNA in the states and need to find a place to hire me so my fiance and I can move together. We thought I didn't meet requirements to apply for PR yet. And we thought about sponsorship but can not afford to live on his Army salary. And unless there is a different type if permit than what I listed, then yes I need the LMO

What's a CNA?

Certified Nurse Assistant. In Canada it is called Health Care Aide, Personal Support Worker or something similar

OK - so based on your profession, you don't qualify under NAFTA. Occupations that qualify under NAFTA are listed here:

http://www.worldtradelaw.net/nafta/chap-16.pdf

If you qualified under NAFTA, you would just need a job offer and could apply for a work permit at the border.

Since you don't qualify under NAFTA, you need a job offer and an approved LMO to apply for a work permit.

When you respond to employers, you need to make it clear that they will have to provide you with a job offer and an approved LMO so that you can then apply for a work permit.

Have you suggested using Skype video call for the interview? Some employers won't do it, but some may. I would at least offer it as a possibility. (Make sure you have a suitable location in the house, clean and no distractions and dress professionally!)

I know I need to say again that I am from the States and that I need a work permit, but how should it be word it so it doesn't sound like a hassel ?

Also, yes on my cover letter it says available for phone and video interviews and in person interviews with advanced notice :). Would really like the Skype one to happen since I'm trying to save money to move!!

This is my experience: If an employer isn't already aware of what a LMO entails, once they find out, they won't be interested. Either it's too much work/hassle, they need an employee faster, or the position wouldn't qualify for one.

I got hired yesterday. Until I pointed out I needed a LMO. (Which I included in my two applications!!!)

Yes, you're a CNA, but you need to look at jobs that typically hire TFW too. It might mean lowering your standards some. I finally started applying at fast food places and have gotten calls at least for the first time in over a year. Do I want to do fast food? No. Do I want to get a job? Yes. At some point, you may need to make that choice.

Good advice.

Sadly, I've already lowered my standards...but maybe not low enough :(

One other thought - can a CNA work in Canada as a HealthAide without a bridge program? I know of one for nursing, but I can't find information for a CNA.

http://www.health.alberta.ca/professionals/health-care-aide-programs.html

That's the closest I've found and they direct you to email hcadirectory@albertahealthservices.ca with questions. If you haven't already checked into this, I would - not just for now, but the future as well.
