Hi,

I'm thinking of applying permanent residency to Canada for my brother. He is residing in India and i'm in the US.
Here is his background:
he has his bachelors degree and has worked in the merchant navy for 7 years.

Would he be eligible for PR? or any other temporary visas to canada work better?

Can an attorney assist me in this process?

Please advice.

Thank you very much!

You should do a bit of research. He could be eligible if he has had at last one year of experience in a list of 38 jobs created by CIC. I don't know what he did for merchant navy but probably not on the list.
He could look for a job and he could apply for PR based on that.
He could also go study there and then apply.
He could try for PR through Quebec, but one needs French generally for that.
He could try for provincial nomination but most of those need a job.

Ok, thanks a lot Rupesh.

He was a Seaman in Merchant Navy.
Will applying thru an attorney work better or by ourselves?

Attorneys are good if you think you will make a mistake in the forms or if you have a special case but for most, they are not necessary. Of course, a good attorney also knows the process well.

I read in the CIC website that authorized representatives can file them.
How can i find out if an attorney is an authorized rep?

The only attorney I know of, is Cohen.

"IT Applicant" is also using a US based lawyer. you can PM him and ask about the details of his lawyer.

They have to be a member of the Canadian Bar, or CSIC

Hello Guys,

I know of a good law firm , they are a bit costly - they charge 3500 $
however they are experts, official law firm for my IT company , also time tested :)

If the cost is reasonable for you guys you cna contact this firm - its called Greenberg Turner (based in Toronto)
