Need advice on renting a room / apartment

Hi, I'm a new international student who will attend Concordia University in Montreal this Fall and currently still searching for a room / apartment to rent near the downtown campus at an affordable price.
I have been searching through student.com and zumper.com and have yet to found one with the above criteria.
Are there any other recommended websites I should check?
Also, is it true that I have to have a friend or relative living in Canada to act as a guarantor? The problem is, I don't have any close relatives living there.

Try kijiji.ca or Craigslist. However be aware of scams that run on Craigslist (if it's too good to be true, it probably is) I'm also starting my university this fall and I found a room through Craigslist. Some places do require credit check and references but you can find places that don't. You should mention that you are an international student and therefore can only provide references outside Canada.
