Need a Nafta Work Permit

Hi all

My American (accountant) husband is currently on a work permit that is tied to his current employer/position.

His outland family class sponsorship has been mailed (awaiting AOR)

He has a new job offer - what is best route to get a Nafta work permit for him for his new job while we await outland to be sponsored.

3.3 Where can a professional apply for a work permit?


Facilitated entry under the NAFTA allows a professional to apply at a POE. An application can also be made at a visa office before departing for Canada.

Are there any complications or additional steps we need to be aware of since we have an in process Outland sponsorship? Also what happens if he quits his current job while he awaits new work permit ? He is American so I think he would be in Canada as a visitor then.

No complications from the PR app; the two apps have nothing to do with each other.

Nothing happens if he quits his job. His status does not change to visitor; he would remain a worker for as long as his current closed work permit is valid, though he can't work for anyone else.

The fastest way to get the NAFTA work permit is to flagpole at the border.

Flagpole means to go to the Canada-US border, officially leave Canada and turn right around and re-enter to change status.

100% do this on your own. It is just a simple process of taking the necessary documents to the border or sending the app to the NY office.

His current work permit is irrelevant. All that matters is that he qualifies for the new permit.

If that is required, then it's something that the employer needs to sort out.
