As a newbie in this country, you all know it's so important to have proof of IDs (at least 2) in your pocket.

Do you know which bank still issue name embossed debit cards? I tried applying for credit cards, all declined. I'm a returning citizen, apparently my credit history has gone sound after me leaving this country for 10+ years.

have you tried applying for a SECURED credit card? this is suppose to be the easiest way to start building credit. it is a credit card for those with little or no credit that you put a down payment on which is used to "secure" your spending limit. i would also recommend asking about the newcomer packages at Scotia Bank, TD and other big banks - some have cc programs for newcomers with no credit. unfortunately, i'm not sure if any canadian bank puts names on debit cards, i have yet to see it.

Even though I have credit active when I returned to Canada, I had hard time to get multiple credit card. Once I had my HSBC, others followed. And yes, the HSBC debit card is name embossed.

Driving license is one and passport / PR card is another. I'm not sure if SIN can be used.

there are no longer sin cards given out. a person gets a piece of paper with the number printed on it, so there is nothing to use for identification purposes.

He's in Vancouver, so BC Services card is an option.

Why would you always need 2 pieces of ID??

Just 1 is enough, unless you are applying for something very specific that requires 2.

It's common that some clubs and pubs need two pieces of ID, totally worth having them with you.

Drivers licence and health services card are my two that I have with me. PR card also.

Hmm in my entire life I've never been asked for more than 1 piece of photo id for any random day-to-day thing.

It's a requirement in BC for service of liquor, it is rarely enforced but legally they can ask.

Even my Scotia debit card does not have my name.

In Quebec , I used to carry Driving License and RAMQ card ( health) in wallet as IDs. My wife used to carry only RAMQ card as she was not driving. RAMQ card was even accepted by TSA at Airport Security check ( though we carried PP as backup while traveling by air).

If you are that concerned then you can carry some other non-govt ID for ex- Costco Card with Name and Photo as ID.

I recently got one from BMO. I think they only gave me one because I updated my card name with them.

In BC, it takes 3 months to get the Health Card. So thinking the easiest/fastest is to get a debit card.

I picked up printed cheques at the bank and the teller asked me for 2 IDs, even I don't know from when does it become so strict on identification requirements.

2 id's are always required when opening a bank account. that's nothing new. 2 id's are hardly needed for everyday things, though.

why not use your passport as an id? i used mine to open my bank accounts in canada. then, all you need is 1 other local id. I was also able to use a foreign credit card, they didn't specify needing a canadian card.

HI,

The banks gives you name embossed Debit cards.
When you open a Checking account one is given a default non name bearing debit card for use right away. You can request one which has your name embossed on it in the branch (mostly) or call the customer care number at the back of the card.

Banks (Verified) which issue the name embossed cards are:

1. BMO
2. Scotia
3. TD
4. CIBC

Hope this helps!!
