Im so confused. If through stage one (which is sponsorship stuff right???) you were refused how could you even proceed with application? It would be pointless right seeing as you wouldn't get permanent residency right? I plan on sending it all together but I don't want to lose all my money simply because I am denied. It took me so long to get the money that being told no and having to redue everything is upsetting.
Did you not read my above post? If sponsorship is rejected you only lose $75. I'll post it a 2nd time:

$75 sponsor application fee is non-refundable.

If sponsor is refused at stage 1, then as long as you didn't check "proceed with application", the process would stop and the $475 applicant fee and $490 RPRF would be refunded.

If applicant is refused during stage 2 processing, then only the $490 RPRF is refunded.

Yes Rob, I read your post. But for some reason it jumbled up in my brain and I didn't understand. Thank you for the more simplified version.

I am scared of them refusing me simply because he is not working, he is a full time engineering student. I also do not have a lot of proof other than letters of one of my family and us two. I have a document stating I have a joint bank account with him and the common law paper signed. But that is about it. :(!!!!!

There is no income requirement, so that shouldn't be a problem. You just need to show a plan of supporting yourselves which can include projected income after finishing university, and letters from family members that they will support you financially if required.

The stat declaration of common-law is not actually needed, but if it's already done you can certainly include it. US applicants also need to have 2 statutory/notarized letters from friends/family that are testimony to the common-law relationship.

And of course proving you cohabited at the same address for 12 months is the main thing to prove.

Stage 1 is the assessment of the sponsor. Stage 2 is assessment of the applicant being sponsored to Canada.
