Citiizenship and Immigration Minister Kenney made some announcements this morning at a settlement house in Vancouver s Chinatown. He announced a large increase in immigrant Settlement services,in the case of BC We got an increase of 13% or about 120 Million $ up from 106$ Million last year.I asked him if there was a plan to expand the 38 Categories of expedited FSW and he said not at the moment, rather they would give the provinces more leeway to expand their PNP programs as well as sticking to the CEC,Immigration levels will be kept at the current levels, since their is a need for Immigrants,The increase in settlement services will be for language skills training, employment and networking assistance. On a personal note,It was snowing like crazy, rare for BC in fact he was late for almost 20 minutes while trying to get a cab from his hotel to go to SUCCESS a immigrant Service society

BCguy, you are brilliant as you've always been in this forum. This is great news. It's good to see that the favorite province cares about its new residents.

Thank you!

We are proud of our diverse province with about 50% of Vancouver s population visibile minority and 25% of our Province s population foriegn born from Europe,Africa,Asia,Latin America etc.Vancouver s largest Communities are European Canadian origin at around 45% Chinese at around 30%,South Asian at around 10%,Filipinos at around 5% with Latin Americans,Africans and the rest rounding up the balance. We are proud of our racial diversity with about 30-40% of all our marraiges being interacial. We are a Canadian leader in Immigrant services to serve our diverse population.A typical Vancouverite like me will have McDonalds from breakfast,Samosas and Butter Chicken for Lunch,Have japanese Tapas at an Izakaya with Sake for Drinks before moving on to A Chinese dinner. The racial harmony can be seen in the partners of our Leaders. My Boss is South Asian married to a Spanish Lady,The leader of the city council Raymond Louie is Canadian Chinese married to a Italian Canadian.Former Foriegn Minister David Emerson is British Canadian married to a Chinese Canadian. My personal lawyer is a Chinese Canadian with a Hungarian common law partner.International Trade Minister Stockwell Day s son married a Filipina and so on.This helps makes my provinceone of the best places on earth to live in

lovely piece of information...............
really nice to have people like you around us.........

Nice to here this interracial marriages and society. Is Vancouver one of the largest city or the largest in CA? How cold is the weather there and what % of snow do you get during the year?

It's something like number 3 in size after Toronto and Montreal.

You can see weather records for Vancouver at http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/weather.php3?s=29817&refer=&units=metric They hardly ever get snow. If they get any, the city grinds to a halt. Right now they are having the most horrible winter ever because it was below freezing for a few days and they got a few cm of snow :)

Right now its Terribile,This will be the first it will snow during Christmas since 1998 and We are having 5 CM of Snow,Thats Horribile,Anything higher like when it hits 8 -12cm,We declare a weather emergency and Yes We are the third largest city in Canada and the largest in Western Canada.and according to Wikipedia We are the 3rd most livable city on earth and the 4th highest quality of life on the Planet,Thats why Albertans bless them keep on investing in our city and Province

But I hope it's not that hot or humid either. I want where snow falls during the xmas but not all yr around. How about Edmonton and Calgary? What are the cities like?

It gets very cold in Edmonton and Calgary but Calgary is closer to the mountains so sometimes they get warm air coming up and they get a bit of a break from the winter cold. Right now it's only -20 in Edmonton which is pretty good considering it was -30 a couple of days ago. Worst it gets to is about -40 or so. In most countries the worst of winter is really January and February so it's not realistic to expect snow at xmas and never at any other time. You can have a lot of snow both in Calgary and Edmonton. Sometimes you have to shovel your sidewalk 3 times a day, morning, after work and before you go to bed. Of course you could ignore it but if you don't shovel, it will get packed down and will be harder to get the next time and there is a law, at least in Edmonton that if you don't shovel your sidewalk, you can be fined.

How about the pipes of the houses?, here when it's cold (-8 c ) the guys on the local news, tell people to leave your faucet drooping water all night so the water pipes doesn't get frozen and brake, for me is a lot of waste water, I'm ready to buy my snow machine to clean the drive way, it's easy than using the shovel :-)

I have never heard about water pipes freezing unless maybe if the heat is off your house or something and you don't empty the pipes. I think the outside ones are buried deep enough so that the don't freeze.

Well it s -8 now and the plumbing supplies are running out at Home depot and Plumbers are on 4-5 day waits,City is effectively shut down by 20cm of snow,Transit,Garbage services etc are not running well. Most people do not know how to deal with frozen pipes.Whats that??Frozen Pipes are as strange as snow in the desert to us.They just announced they have closed down the airport to all flights,Trains,Skytrain are down also.20 cm of snow what a mess

It's only -13 here so you see, AB is not really much colder than BC :P

But really, I have never heard of anybody's pipes freezing. Only one coworkers car froze because he didn't have enough antifreeze in everything and I believe this happened when it was about -40 or was it -45 sometime last winter. It was kind of chilly anyway. Too much for his car. It wasn't a big deal though, he had to take it to a shop to thaw and it cost him $200.

This sounds like here when snow flurries fall, it's a complete shut down, the local news made things worst by over reacting and made things bigger than they really are.
