I think common-law is more hard to prove for sure. You have to prove you have lived together for a year as well as be in a congugal relationship which makes things a little more complicated. We applied common-law as well and so far no interview, but I do not wipe it out entirely the possibility of a interview either.I learned very quickly with what happened to my spouses medicals that any small thing that you may not even think about can make your case more complicated, and it happens in an instant. LeisaP and itscoezy, I think you two both have strong, genuine relationship with your spouses. Sometimes I think its just about where you collect your proof. In our case, we spent almost half of our common-law year living in Mexico, and the other in Canada, So I have experience collecting documents on both sides. I thought this would make our application confusing. For Mexico I found it really hard to collect proof of our common-law. Our puchases were mostly in cash (im not sure about the rest of Mexico, but something very common in Cancun) We lived with family so had no lease, etc. We did however, have other proof though which proved our living arrangements there.

I think you will do great on your interview itscoezy :)

Lets hope this week is a good one for Mexico City!

yeah i agree with the collecting evidence thing.
we lived together 2 years in canada before applying. so all our evidence, like multiple joint accounts, multiple joint bills, leases, car, health insurance, big household items, dog, common-law declaration, taxes etc. all those big thing we got because we had to/wanted to anyways. we already had all those things before we even thought about applying. so gathering our evidence was quite easy, which was good! because it seems very stressfull trying to get good evidence. :o

weve lived here in mexico now for 7 months and my name isnt allowed on anything of my spouses, they wont allow me on any bills or insurance or our lease, nothing, soo i would agree with you, it seems much harder to get the right pieces of evidence here than back in canada.

but anyways the interviews are good, the officer can always see a genuine relationship when they meet the person, so Itscoezy wont have any problems with the interview! :D

I feel like were going to see some sort of action this week, not for us, but for others on here :)

Its true! when I first moved to Mex and even when my spouse came to visit Canada we had no idea we were applying common-law until about halfway through, so going back it was really hard to find evidence in Mexico! Canada was no problem because we had a lot, not for immigration at all just because it was things we needed, but Mexico, oh man that was a pain!

Maybe this is a dumb question but why not just get married? Seems like it would be so much easier.

Well in our case we were thinking about it but it ended up making more sense logistically for us to apply common-law.. by the time we starting looking around for our options seriously we were already 7-8months in for qualifying for common-law so it made sense for us at that time

my husband was a refugee and when he got denied. we had to make a quick choice.
apply common-law because we already lived together 2 years. or marry. and marriage is incredibly important to both of us. so it made no sense for us to run to a court house and get married for immigration purposes when it wasnt necessary.
we will marry one day when the situation is right and we can have all our family and friends there and do it the right way :)

Yeah, exactly. I agree with leisas point too :) Well, minus the denied refugee part for us, lol.

So did we, I guess luck of the draw.

Itscoezy,

Did you end up submitting the extra proof that they asked for? I just wonder if the interview request came after they reviewed your extra evidence... seems like it came pretty quick following their previous request.

Well it is pretty cool that Canada allows common law sponsorship. The US does not as far as I know. Marriage is a huge commitment and you should be allowed to live your lives together without being forced to say I DO.

Yeah i agree its really nice that canada allows common-law
the usa doesnt but they have a fiance visa. so if ur engaged they allow u to come spend before your wedding im not sure how many months though i think 3 but i could be wrong lol.

but anyways yeah i agree :)

In our case my SO was married previously and we just finalized the divorce last year, it was the simplest divorce but took forever. We still can't get married though because you have to be divorced in Mexico for one year before you can remarry, no matter how long you were separated for before the divorce finalized.

Well lol...
I didn't send them the information yet. I emailed them a few too many times to confirm if they had received the original part of my application as I didn't understand why they wanted more proof as what they were asking for, I thought we had already sent. I was just confused as to if i was sending all my original proof, or if they wanted extra. They kept giving me a general answer not confirming if they received the original documents. Anyways it turns out they called my SO and told him they wanted electricity and water bills in both of our names which we don't have as they wouldn't let me put my name on them when I moved here. So I emailed them to ask if we could send them anything else to satisfy their request as we didn't have those 2 bills. They responded with an interview request.... So I think I P*ssed them off.

Ugh... I hope we can redeem ourselves.

Did anyone here request caip or gmcs or wahtever they are called notes on their file?
if so did you use privacy act or the access to information act?
Not sure which to choose...
