While we´re on the topic of driver´s licences, I have a question...I was going to look into this but maybe somebody here knows.

Last year my alberta driver´s licence was going to expire on my birthday in september. So I had to fax in some special paperwork in order to renew it from Mexico. But you can only do this once and it is only valid for one year.

So now my driver´s licence is going to expire in september again, but I can´t do the paperwork from last year. I don´t think I will be back in Canada by the beginning of september to renew it on time...So what happens?

If it expires do I have to re-do the road test or is there some way I can get a new one without a test?

Looks like you're safe for a couple more years (see quote and blue text below). One less thing to worry about :)

I'd print a copy of the page I link to below for my records when I got back, FWIW.

"Renewing a Driver's Licence

Plan to renew your driver's licence before the expiry date arrives. You may renew your licence up to one year before the licence expires. Courtesy reminder renewal forms for driver's licences are generally mailed to clients six to eight weeks before the expiry. If you have lost the renewal notice or have not received one in the mail, you do not need this form in order to renew you licence.

Renewals must be done in person at any registry agent office. Only residents of Alberta are eligible to renew. Anyone 75 years or older is required to submit a medical report. Medical reports are also required for holders of Class 1, 2 and 4 licences and for all licences with a condition code "C". It is not legal to drive with an expired licence. Any licence that has been expired for more than 3 years will be subject to passing another written and road test before reinstatement. If the photograph on your licence is four or more years old, a new one will have to be taken."

Thanks Leisa and OhCanadiana! That´s good news, I really didn´t want to do another road test. :P

One question, what came first? Was it the ARC or the police certificates? I'm just trying to get an idea for example if you handed the PGR and all that, how long after were you requested to submit the ARC?

I've gotten a lot of conflicting responses from CIC. First they told me that I didn't need one, that there was an error in the system saying I needed one (lol yeah right). Then months later when I asked again, I was told that I would indeed need one, but that I wouldn't have to pay for it. And I haven't asked again out of fear of opening Pandora's box.
. The police certificates come first and just before ppr comes the arc. I'm pretty sure u don't need one because if u did then they shud have asked u by now.

I hope you're right, but remember that I haven't handed in all my police certificates. A month ago they asked me to submit an FBI police certificate, which my dad already mailed out to me and I will be getting on Tuesday. So I'm hoping that they don't ask for an ARC. 2 more months will seem like an eternity.

I really wish CIC was more consistent regarding the ARC and that they actually gave the correct information.
I can understand somewhat the lack of info though. Back in the day when Mexicans didn't need a visa to go to Canada, the average processing time for an ARC was one year (!!) then 6 months after the whole visa thing, they managed to reduce the processing time to 6 months, now if you tell me that it's only taking 2-3 months then it's a good thing, but after 3 years of paperwork, another 2 months will infuriate me.

Plus I'd be landing in the middle of the winter, HELL NO!! :o

I really really hope you don´t need one edgar! I mean it´s kind of their fault for not knowing what is going on in the first place! But don´t worry soon you will be in Canada eating poutine and drinking tim horton´s. ;D

. I just hope they don't ask you for one.. I just don't know but I have this feeling that this FBI certificate was the last obstacle in ur application. And after this u will get your ppr. I can be wrong also but I just sed what I felt. :)

Can anyone tell me the cheapest way to call canada from a mexico cell phone... :o

please and thanksss!! :D

(just dont get drunk and crazy a wendys bacon cheese burger, like my best friend did.. haha she ruined 2 years of being vegan over that!)

I love animals and hate what happens in factory farming plus I watched Forks Over Knives which is very convincing. I was raised vegetarian so it's easier. I love Mac and cheese though.

Lol at your friend!
