So I have been wondering something about income taxes. Maybe someone will know..
When I file my income tax next year in 2013 (for 2012 year) since I got married in 2012 I need to file for the first time as married vs single.
Is it as simple as literally just ticking the married box vs single or will there be more questions / paperwork involved.
I really don’t have any experience with this I normally just use a software program
So for example if my husband doesn’t land until 2013 then I am wondering if they are going to ask questions about my spouses income or address when I file for 2012 ?.. or will they only need for the next tax yr after he lands?

Next question. For anyone who is from Ontario and was married in Mexico.
Did you do anything with your marriage certificate in Canada?
After we were married I contacted the Ontario government and they told me I didn’t have to do anything and just referred me to the family sponsorship website.
I am assuming from my income taxes when I file next year then they will update that I’m married in Canada?

Ah, my wife is an expert on this topic :)

Whenever she files, she does tick the married box and the government ALWAYS asks for information regarding me, like my address and where I work, bla bla bla. The only thing she does is that she sends them a letter explaining the situation (currently going through spousal sponsorship, spouse not present in Canada, etc.) and that seems to work just fine for her.

we filed our income tax in 2011 and changed it to file as common-law (married) because revenue canada only recognizes married. kind of. lol on some of the forms it says common-law and some say married. but when they sent us a bill to pay back money they classified us as married. so i guess to them its the same.

anyways the first time we did common-law instead of single we did it through an accountant and she just gave us a simple paper saying we changed status to common-law and had both us sign it. and that was it nothing more.
so i think its pretty simple.
we did our taxes again in 2012 as common-law and it again said we were married. lol

im not sure about his info though and if they would ask him to file even though he wasnt here. maybe someone else knows the answer to that. :p

Have you set up your CRA account online? You can go in and update your status to married and date (I think it says somewhere on there that we are to tell them as soon as a marital change happens). I got married last year, this year when I went to file my taxes it asked for my spouse's information and income, since it's foreign there's a special form that needs to be filled out, also cus there's no SIN number... you might have to do the same thing next year...

Ok thanks edgar the letter sounds like a good idea.. So I guess she doesn't net file over the internet then? She just literally includes a letter in the package she puts in the mail?

Well it has only happened twice and the first time she was contacted by the government for my information, when she told them about our situation, they told her to write that letter. The following year she assumed they already had our info and the same thing happened. So I would include the letter in the package to avoid having them contact you.

Ah it must be different in BC then, I got married in Canada... I tried doing it with the tax program I usually use but ended up going to H&R Block that's where the lady explained the process if you're married to a foreigner.

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/esrvc-srvce/tx/ndvdls/myccnt/menu-eng.html

You click on register and follow the prompts. The online account shows your previous tax year returns, your T4s, if you owe anything etc, it also gives you your online access code for filing your taxes through the internet, I find it pretty handy...

Ohh ok thanks for the link that will be helpful for my use.. But ya if you are married in mexico my understanding is u don't register it the same way as being married outside... I think I just check off that I'm married include the letter explaining and they probably won't care untill my husband has income here to claim...

Hello everyone, I am new here and I have a question, I hope you can help me. I live in Montreal and am sponsoring my wife who lives in Mexico. We are applying through Mexico City. Where am I supposed to pay the fees? I understand that the sponsorship application is processed here in Canada and then the file is sent to Mexico City for the permanent residence to be processed. Am I right? If I want to pay for both the sponsorpship application and the right of permanent residence at once online am I able to do it? Or does the right of permanent residence need to be paid in Mexico (considering it will be processed there)? I am very confused. I would appreciate your help :) Thank you!
