He has to get a waiver aka a pardon and a visitors visa. We will try. But when he left - it started a ten year ban. I'm a US citizen too and we started the green card process but it's a difficult path. One day...

Hi everyone,
I've been lurking this thread for awhile and finally decided I should register and introduce myself. I'm sponsoring my wife. We applied in January 2012 and got sponsorship approval in March. We have submitted the SSP and PGR and our e-cas has been updated to "medical results have been received." So at this point, I believe we are just waiting on the PPR.
I'd put a timeline in my profile, but I gather I can't do that until I've posted a certain number of times?

Hi Mavimoly, you need 10 posts for that, so just write 9 more posts and you should be able to put in your timeline!

@mavimolly, how long has it been since you submitted the PGR and SSR?

When my husband gets his PR card, does he need to carry it around with him? Will employers want a copy of it? Just wondering what its purpose will be. I think we still won't get it for about 6 weeks.

Most places just want your SIN here

From what I read, it's actually recommended that you never carry it with you and that you should get a safe deposit box and leave it there. It should only be used when traveling abroad. I'm actually curious about this.

What do you Canadians carry to identify yourself? Is it the drivers license? What if you don't have one? What do you use? How do you prove your age when they ask for your ID at a bar for example? Here in Mexico as you all know we use the IFE (Voting ID) for basically everything.

If we don't have a drivers license, we carry an I'd card. It looks almost identical to a drivers license just says "identification card" instead of "drivers license" lol.

I would say the drivers license is the norm (in Ontario atleast). My grandparents have been PRs for fifty years and they never carry their PR cards, only when travelling. If you dont have a Drivers License, you can use your Canadian passport, but from my experience that is a last resort type of thing (who wants to go around all night carrying their passport?!) I think you can also use the new health card with your picture on it, but I am not 100% sure since I always use my drivers license.

Usually you dont really have to identify yourself in my experience.. and I have never been asked if I am a citizen or a PR at my job, just for my SIN number.

The main purpose of the PR card is to prove status when traveling (airlines 'recognize' the PR Card as a legal status document). You can also prove to show his legal status in Canada - things you've used CoPR for so far such as SIN numbers (they are different for 'temporary' vs 'permanent' residents) or eligibility for health care. By using the card, his CoPR can stay in the safe deposit box for ever (well, at least until his naturalization application).

For the most part, he'll just use his DL as primary ID (as others have mentioned).

Apparently there's an ID in 9 different provinces, but since it's a provincial matter, it's no wonder I didn't know of it. I left Ontario in 2008 and they released theirs last year.
