This is the best summary I've seen on the topic of health insurance and it applies to all provinces and territories: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/russia-russie/visas/health_insurance-assurance_sante.aspx?lang=eng&view=d

Note that this is also from an official Government of Canada website (the Moscow visa office's web page.)

Hope that helps.

Do you really mean BEFORE arrival in toronto so basically a travel insurance to cover your trip to toronto) or do you mean a health insurance until your OHIP kicks in (3 months waiting period)?

Yes, I mean during the travel and then for the first 3 months till getting the health cards

there are some options. people often mention blue cross but I wasn't really impressed with them when I got my wify insured for the first 3 months with them. you might also check other insurance companies in Canada such as industrial alliance (which is even worse than blue cross, though). As an alternative (I would do if I were you) you might consider some kind of travel insurance from your home country. I know that a lot of Europeans go for this option instead. But the coverage and policies vary from country to country so you need to do some research yourself....

Hi All,
I landed in Aug 2011 and got my PR cards. I returend to India and now planning to go back finally by Aug this year.
I have not yet taken any health cards. My question is that "I will have to wait for 3 months from the time I go back to canada for getting the health cards ?"

Please let me know abt this or any other information in this regards.

Thanks,
Sharat Joshi

Yes - you will have to wait three months from the time you go back to Canada before getting the health card.

Just want to say from experience that medical insurance to cover the first 3 months in Canada DOES NOT COVER pregnancy, just in case if it will be your case.

In 2008 I made extensive research on this and the outcome is that most people go for a travel insurance, made for this purpose as they know it is a problem for 3 months for landed immigrants.

NOTE: not every province has this 3 months waiting period. Example at least in 2008: Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and some smaller ones give you insurance as soon as you land

In our case this is the ONLY REASON we landed in Alberta, we couldn't go to a province that has that 3 months wait.

Hope it helps

I got coverage from Ontario BlueCross for about $328.00 for the 3-month waiting period for my spouse.
Got it online, no hassle, but ofcourse its for emergency purposes only. We're just about a month or so away from being covered under ohip

I think all provinces should allow coverage from Day 1 for all new immigrants, it sucks to spend more money on private insurance companies, I'd rather give the money to OHIP instead and have coverage from Day 1.
