Maximum length of TRV visa

Apologies if this question was aksed somewhere but I honestly looked thoroughly with no luck. My question:

What is maximum length of a typical TRV visitor's visa that can be given for a family member (a brother) to visit? Is it 6 months with no exception?

To correctly answer your question I need to divide the answer into two categories:
1) TRV validity . Generally TRV are issued for multiple entries till the validity of your current passport. But in certain cases a single entry TRV or a multiple entry TRV for a specified time period i.e. valid for a year or two years are also issued. This is decided by the IRCC and based on the individual application.
2) The length of the visit is decided by the CBSA at the POE. Generally it granted for a six month period.but may also be shorter.

To clarify second item a bit more, it is never longer than 6 months.

No. If the CBSA doesn't stamp an exit.date then the maximum permissible limit is always six months but you can apply for an extension but approval is not always guaranteed.

That's wrong, I have seen folks getting the visitor record for a year long duration (although linked with their spouse WP validity).

We are talking about family visiting not visas tied to a work permits like for a child. When entering the standard maximum amount of time for visitors is 6 months. Without being a family member of a work permit holder you will not get a 1 year stay at the POE.
