Hello all

My partner and I had heard of some horror stories of being detained and questioned before being allowed to enter Canada, and even from a brother-in-law with coming from USA and only being allowed 1 month despite everything else checking out. See here: Tourist for 6 months visiting my fiance who will support me. Need own funds?

Therefore we want to ensure we are as prepared as possible just in case they want to ask any questions or see proof of anything.

I am planning to carry on me through YEG airport:

  • Flight ticket there
  • Just-in-case return flight ticket for 6 months time
  • Travel insurance for the 6 months
  • International Driving Permit
  • Bank statement of the past 2 months
  • Proof of emergency credit card funds
  • Partner's bank statement of the past 2 months whom I will be staying with and paying for everything for my stay
  • Partner's letter of employment and wage
  • Details for my partner including home and contact details

Now, what I do not have is the following:
  • My letter of employment and earnings because I have had to leave my job in order to be in Canada for the initial 6 months (not to mention if I do get the PR no problem...)
  • I do not have much more than £1k of my own money even though my fiance will be paying for everything during my stay

Does anybody think I can do anything more to be more prepared for the highest success rate possible?

Maybe a photo of me, her, and her son together at dinner dated January 2013?

Have you filed your PR application yet? If not, have you at least paid the fees?

I have not started the application because we are to get married Jan/Feb and therefore I am entering Canada with dual intent. 1. Visit for 6 months. 2. Get married to a citizen and begin PR application while I am in Canada. (then 1.2 I will be applying for a visitation extension of a further 12 months while we wait for the PR to go through.)

Bumping for any extra info anybody might have?

If anything, it would put my fiance's mind at rest who is worrying and stressing that she has built her son/my stepson up to the day only to suffer my first disappointment in his life. Not the best of circumstances I am sure many will agree.

Thank you.

How about NOT showing the intent of marrying and settling in Canada during this specific visit? Showing your intent to settle in Canada before marriage and before sponsorship is quite risky.

Unless specifically asked by the immigration officer, avoid all mention of marriage etc. just say visiting for a few months. Technically this is correct, because you would not settle in Canada if you would not have married.

Points in green below work to your advantage, while ones in red you should avoid.

Flight ticket there
Just-in-case return flight ticket for 6 months time
Travel insurance for the 6 months
International Driving Permit
Bank statement of the past 2 months
Proof of emergency credit card funds
Partner's bank statement of the past 2 months whom I will be staying with and paying for everything for my stay
Partner's letter of employment and wage
[edit] Focus more on your employment, your wages [edit]
Details for my partner including home and contact details
