Hi All,

I recently got married. My spouse is applying for PR under CEC this August and I'll apply later in December. I have few questions related to this:

1. Is it necessary to get the surname changed after marriage? Will it be an issue for immigration?
2. If is recommended to get the surname changed, what all documents needs to be changed? I think SIN Information, Bank Records, Driver's License Information & CRA Information needs to be changed. Please let me know if I missed something.
3. Does all Immigration Documents requires the applicant to have a single surname?
4. For PCC, the background check will be done based on her previous name only. Right?
5. We booked the date for IELTS before getting married. So the IELTS document will have her previous name. Is it OK or I should get that changed as well?

Thanks a lot in advance.

why don't you apply jointly? It means a principle applicant and a dependent but it is a lot easier than applying separately and having two sets of IELTS, two reviews etc etc.

in answer to your question, you can each have a different surname - not everyone who gets married changes their name.
I wouldn't recommend your spouse having different documents in different names though - it opens up risk for confusion

Thanks for your reply. We are applying jointly only. Just to eliminate the risk of rejection we are applying twice. In her application I'll be the dependent and in my application she'll be the dependent.

I think the same about having different names in different documents, but then does that mean we need to update her Passport as well?

I never thought of it this way. I guess if both of you can be eligible as principal applicant you can apply twice just in case one gets delayed/refused for whatever reason you have a back up ;D

I don't think you need to change your wife's last name. In fact lots places around the world people don't have their wives' last name changed to their husbands and they immigrate to Canada just fine. My wife has a different last name than mine and the only problem I have is when filing taxes they assume it's the same as mine and don't give you a space to fill it in :p

Thanks for replying. Okay so I am not going for name change as of now but do I have to inform anyone about this? because the name is not changing only the marital status is changing.

I'm pretty sure change of marital status is a big thing and you should let CIC know about that.

Do you mean before applying for PR??? because my application will have my wife as dependent and my marital status will be married.

Well both. If you haven't submitted your application you submit with documents showing you are already married. If you marry after you apply for PR, then you also need to let them know you just got married by submitting necessary documents.
