Hi all,

Just wanted to start a thread for people waiting for LMOs in Alberta, or any other province for that matter. I contacted service Canada recently and they said they were currently working on applications received in the beginning of July. Does anyone know approx how many applications they receive per day vs. How many get processed per day on average?

If you have had an LMO accepted in the past few months or are still waiting to be processed please post your timeline so those of us who are waiting have some idea what to expect. Thanks!

I'll start..
LMO recieved by service Canada in Alberta on Aug 3 2011...currently waiting!

Surprised there aren't more posts! You'd think there would be lots of people who are waiting for, or have recent LMO approvals judging by the long wait time!

Our LMO was received by Serice Canada on July 13, 2011 and we received it September 9, 2011. 8.5 weeks!

I am a bit confused, though. . . we are from the US.

My husband and I have both been hired by a company in Alberta to be Group Home Operators (Teaching Parents). NOC 4212-B. We have been told by some that we can go to the border and apply for our TWP there; others have told us that we have to apply at the visa office in Washington, DC.

We have considered driving from here to Port Erie to apply for the TWP and then return to our current home to pack our animals and belongings. (Port Erie is much closer to our home than Alberta! So we figured we could get the TWP and then make the long trek to Alberta).

How can we know if we need a medical exam? If we get to the border and they decide we need a medical, what happens? Do they hold the file and allow us to return with a completed medical when we need to enter Alberta? Or do we have to come home, apply at the visa office, and wait for our section A?

We are simply trying to speed up this process. Our job was ready for us 2 weeks ago, so we want to get there as soon as possible!

We will also need to hire a lawyer once we get our TWPs and settle in Canada because we'd like to apply for Permanent Residency. How long do we have to be on a TWP to apply? We don't want to have to go through the LMO renewal process!

I believe you will need a medical if you are going to be working with patients, children, or be in close proximity with people for most of the day. So this includes anyone in the healthcare field, teachers, food workers, etc. But I am not 100% sure so you should call in to confirm. I think if you try to get a work permit at the border and you need a medical they will simply turn you around and you'll have to go to a visa office in the states. We were in a very similar situation where we thought we could apply at the border but since we are in the health field we found out we'll have to go tothe visa office in LA. Do you know if TFWs from the states will need a security/background check before being issued a TWP?

I know nothing about a background check, but if anyone else does. . . please let us know!

The CIC rep. I spoke to today said that we will need a medical exam. He told us to go get one done and use their blank Section A 1017 form and have them send off the results. Then I can call CIC to check if the results were input into the computer. . . and THEN go to the border and apply for the work permit.

Everyone, though, has conflicting information. We are going to try the above plan. ;D
We shall see! I'd still love to hear comments from those with experience.

AND-- know anything about PR after we start working as TFWs?

Where would one get a blank Section A 1017 form? We had inquired about such a form in the past in order tO get the Medicals going while we waited for LMO approval but were always told we had to apply for the wp first in order to get the medical form with our file number on it. We were told this was the only way! May I ask when you are planning on getting this blank form and doing the medical? Since you guys are a few weeks ahead of us in this process we might be able to gain some insight from your experience. For us, we are nowhere near any border so to risk being turned around if it doesn't work would really suck! :) by the way, I heard there is a way to expedite the medicals if you ask the doctor. Let me know if this works for you! :) glad to see there are people out there in our shoes and happy we can help each other! :)

I just looked up section A 1017 form and it appears to be for spousal/ common law pr applicants only? I guess it is still worth a try if you are close enough to a border :)

Timemachine, thank you so much. i'll pray for your positive lmo. It will surely come. By the way I have a friend whom applied by the employer for lmo in alberta. The lmo took only 3weeks but i believe that's case to case basis. He's a butcher... Depending perhaps on the labor shortage by profession.

This is crazy long, I guess so. I am wondering the same thing. I signed the very detailed contract and did the background check thing and everything and still waiting. I have called Service Canada but said they cannot disclose any information to me, the prospective employer has to call. Which is fine I heard from the company last week that they would follow up with it but still no word. It's strangely becoming a long wait. I will just have to wait and see.
