You can certainly go without linking, I did when I sponsored my husband. It just means you have less information to go on in terms of updates, but the process remains the same. I figured I'm not a neurotic enough person to need to constantly be checking up on our application and we were just fine without linking! If you're ever curious about the status of your application, you can always call and ask. You will also continue receiving more major status updates via email and letters.
