Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding driving. So the story is I came here August 2010 as a refugee. I became a PR Feb 2013. I had a valid (not expired drivers license) from my home country but it expired in 2011. I have not been in a position to really think about driving or owning a car since I arrived. Now, however I am in much better state/environment. My question is, can I claim any credit or anything for my driving experience (10 years experience)? Do I have to start from G1 and do the whole thing from scratch?? Or can I save myself time and money at all? My license does have a clear expiry date on it and it's in english, but it's not from one of the "exchange" countries. Thanks guys!

Depends on the province you live. By what you have written, seems like you are in Ontario. The only way to skip the graduated learning program is to have a certificate of driving or a drivers abstract as it is commonly referred from your home country and take it to the licensing authority in your city.

Then you can skip and get the full privilege license without restrictions directly. Hope this helps.

Hi yeah that helps but I was wondering if I can claim any credit at all?

I understand that your home country driving license is expired as on today. If that is the case, it has no standing.
They wont consider it valid even if its expired a couple of days back. You need to have the valid license (Which is not yet expired) to be considered for waiver of time.

You need to follow the process from start G1 -> G2 -> G

However, if you can get the renewed license from your home country and a letter saying that you had a license from them and you had experience driving car there, you can skip the 2 year time line for G license.

If you cant get the renewed license, I am afraid you will have to follow the process from start to end.
Hope it helped.
