You are supposed to get the rejection letter but honestly there are hundreds who didnt get any letter when their application was refused.

Is there any other mechanism to determine whether you have been accepted or not?

Different institution follow different procedures:
1. Some may send rejection by email.
2. Some may provide rejection letter with explanation. Mostly reputed Uni does that and not colleges.
3. For some institution you need to login to their portal and see your application status by yourself.
4. Check your Spam/Junk folders of email.
