... because I wanna take some time off and travel.

My visa expires in early July, I sent my EE application off in May. I haven't applied for the BOWP yet, but I think I will soon.

Can I then leave the country in August, come back in as a visitor, and start working again whenever the BOWP comes through (which would probably be end of August)?
Or is it a silly idea to "waste" the implied status?

I would strongly suggest you not to leave Canada at this time cos you never know what CBSA will do .... They have the rights to refuse you to come in as a visitor as always and don't put yourself into a weird situation.
