My partner will be landing from the US when we get the COPR, my question is, is there an expiry date to land?

The expiration date will coincide with the expiry date of your husband's medical exam (medical exams expire after 1 year). For example, if he did his medical march 2014 and he receives his COPR in august, his COPR will expire in march 2015, so he has time to land until then.

Thanks for replying:)I have a few more questions:)

So how long do you have to stay or can they go right back to the States and get their affairs in order before moving to Canada?

i think it's best to resolve everything before landing. depending on your timeline, he may have plenty of time to do that.

i'm not sure about going back after.. he can surely do it, but in certain conditions, the COPR can have a so-called condition no. 51 on it, stating the PR is conditional: he has to cohabitate with you for 2 years after landing. This applies if you don't have any children together or you were married for less than 2 years when you applied for PR. but according to new updates, seems like a few weeks pause in the cohabitation are reasonable and won't affect his PR.

anyway, more experienced users may have a better idea about this.

Your partner can land whenever they want, as long as it's before the COPR expires. There's no requirement to stay in Canada afterwards (other than needing to live in Canada 2 out of every 5 years to maintain PR, although condition 51 might muddy that rule up a bit.) There have been lots of cases of people landing for a weekend, getting a SIN card and then going back home to keep working until they could find a job in Canada, or to finish their schooling.

If your partner is not ready to settle, do the landing procedure with the B4a form (goods to follow) - this allows your partner to move their things into Canada later without worrying about duty. Also, COPR isn't good for re-entry, so when your partner is ready to really move into Canada they will need to apply for a travel document if they haven't received their PR Card yet. Although, someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't apply to people crossing by land borders.

In terms of Condition 51, I am under the impression it really is only a risk if you and your partner live at 2 separate addresses for an extended period of time. It's really up to you to follow the condition of living together after landing for 2 years, as best you can. If it would only take a couple of months to get your partner ready to really settle, you shouldn't worry I wouldn't think.

Thx for the info marlasinger! Our app was received the end of March and we just assumed it would be the 15mo that the site showed. Since Ive found this forum I noticed that people are processing alot quicker. My partner kinda freaked out cause she wasnt mentally ready to get here that quick, so it will be all bonus time if its sooner than next june, LOL

Well, the 15 months is a representation of 80% of cases. 50% of cases are usually processed faster than that. 15 months is my wait time too, for Ottawa, but my aunt who works for in Immigration, told me the average completion time is actually closer to 6 months, And like you said, around here it's falling between 7 and 10 months. Some 12. You can bet on your partner's COPR expiration date to be when she had her medicals done, so keep that date in mind while she's mentally preparing herself. It might help with planning :)

keep in mind too, if the medicals are set to expire before the processing is over, the visa office has the ability to extend them, so the COPR may also have a date representative of the extension, not the original exam date.

Do you know if form B4A is issued by CBSA or comes with the COPR?

From my understanding, there's no reason to apply for a travel document entering Canada as I assume the spouse is a US Citizen with a US passport.
