I will be landing with my family in Toronto tomorrow. I am planning to take with me 10,000 US dolars in travelers cheques and my wife, who will be landing with me will be carrying another 10,000 US dolars. I have just read on-line the following:

"If you are importing or exporting monetary instruments equal to or greater than CAN$10,000 (or its equivalent in a foreign currency), whether in cash or other monetary instruments, you must report it to the CBSA when you arrive

THE QUESTION I have is if that limit is per person or in our case is 10,000 dolars the entire family. Do you know if they really check how much money are you bringing into Canada?

THANK YOU!

hi felipao-

here are some useful info... http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/landing-importing-personal-possessions-t14553.0.html

there are more about this topic under the settlement section of the forums. :)

they will check your money when you land in canada for the 1st time.

better declare you're carrying $20000 with you. there's no harm no charge for it.

There is no maximum limit to the amount of money youi can bring in or take out of Canada. The only point is that if it is over 10,000 CAD, you need to tell the officers.

Disclosure of funds

If you arrive in Canada with more than C$10,000, you must disclose this information to the CBSA officer. If you do not disclose this information, you could be fined or put in prison. These funds could be in the form of:

* cash
* securities in bearer form (for example, stocks, bonds, debentures, treasury bills) or
* negotiable instruments in bearer form, such as bankers' drafts, cheques, travellers' cheques or money orders.

What you can bring into Canada

You can find customs and border information on the website of the CBSA.
