Hello mates! i completed my landing process on 19 March 2016 and it was a smooth one. i was particularly satisfied because i did not hire any agent for my application. i must thank you all for helping me immensely. This wouldn't be possible without your help.

Anyway, as i am in Canada now i have few more problems to solve. Which bank account should i go for as a newcomer? i am tight on cash, hence would prefer one with no minimum balance drama.

Please suggest.

You have completed a major landmark in your career and life. Congrats for that.
Do keep posted on which Bank you figured out for opening the bank account. as we all face this problem in future.

So you carried less cash with you? and how do you manage your staying.

Check out CIBC. They have a special checking account plan for new Canadian residents. https://www.cibc.com/ca/chequing-savings/newcomers.html

Most of the banks give 6 months all free accounts to newcomers.
However, post 6 months, almost every bank will ask you to maintain anywhere between 2-5K Canadian Dollars on a day to day basis, based on how many features and services you want.
It is not impossible to find a bank which will give a 0 balance account post 6th month, but trust me their services will be sh*t.

TD, ScotiaBank, RBC, CIBC, BMO are some of the banks you should target. You can also negotiate better services by offering them to make your account the one where u get your salary deposits.

Thanks, pal! i did carry less cash as the conversion rate did not seem attractive. And i'm staying at my friend's at the moment.

i will transfer funds as soon as i get my new Canadian bank account.

Hi Alok/Others,

I have a similar confusion about transit visa for Canada to India.

My spouse would be returning from Canada to India (YYZ to DEL) within 2 weeks of completing the "landing". The flight I am planning to book has layover of 3 hrs in Heathrow (London), so will a transit visa be required for UK?

> She won't have her Canadian PR card
> Her Canadian Immigrant visa affixed on passport has a future expiry date from date of travel
> She will have her copy of COPR.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Cheers,
LazyBoy

No transit VISA required through European airports as long as you have VISA and tickets for onward travel to North America.

I got a similar confirmation to yours from my local transport authority and I'm wondering the same thing. I don't know whether it answers your question, but I found this on the internet:

Hi, Canada is not that expensive a country, you picked an expensive province to land in. The cost of living in BC is very high compared to the rest of Canada. Ontario is not as high as BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskathchewan have even lower costs of living. I advise everyone to do your homework before you decide where you want to settle and be prepared for the reality when you arrive. Cheers.

I don't think you need a transit visa. Check this (read the first point under Exemptions) --->

Thanks rajkamalmohanram! +1 to you :)

I already checked on the link provided by you before posting my query in this forum, however since I was confused about the first point that you highlighted, hence was seeking a second opinion.

Exemptions
You don’t need a visa if you have one of the following:
> a visa for Canada, New Zealand, Australia or the USA (this can be used for travel to any country)

I hope they consider the immigration visa as valid and let me board the flight from Toronto.

Cheers,
LazyBoy

Normally a transit Visa is not required through UK if you have a valid VISA for any of these countries:
US,Canada,Aus,NZ.

Coming for first time landing, we all satisfy this condition, since we have entry visa for Canada stamped on our passports.
However, if you remember, the immigration officer kind of invalidates our single entry Visa by striking it off with a pen.
Hence, for a return journey from Canada to India, I am not sure if this Visa is still considered valid.
A PR card is definitely accepted, but for a short landing and return, you would not have it.

I am more inclined to say that a transit Visa through UK is not required in this case well.
But I have my doubts as I am not totally sure about what will be the state of single entry Visa after it is struck off with a pen by immigration officer.

This situation can be considered very similar to this.
Let's say you were on work permit valid till 31st Dec 2016.
You board a flight in Toronto on 31st Dec evening.
But by the time you reach Heathrow, it is already afternoon on 1st Jan.
How is your Canadian work permit VISA treated then, for the purpose of deciding if you need Direct Air Side Transit Visa, valid or invalid?

This is the kind of grey area I am talking about.

Hi everyone! I am in dilemma, as I am diagnosed with BP and just few days ago yesterday I was diagnosed with high sugar (don't know yet what stage or type). So can someone guide me that should I inform my visa office before landing or shall it make it any difference to my case. If not, then can I carry my 6 months medications along with me without any issues?

My visa & mine family visa has been already stamped on our passports & planning to land in Toronto soon.

I don't have any goods to follow so how many forms & which forms shall I fill?

Thanks in advance.
