Dear All

I completed my landing formalities at Detroit-Windsor tunnel. I made a mistake of telling the IO that I will be returning to US the same day and the IO did not issue me the PR card. I wasn't familiar with this forum before landing and hence I told the truth. Is any one in the same situation as I am? If so please advise how did you get your PR card. Can I update my friend's address on eCAS now? I heard some one say that in earlier forums. Please help. I am worried :(

Hi Pooja,

I landed as a Permanent Resident last Mar 2010 in Douglas, BC.We crossed the border between USA and Canada to apply for our PR cards.
I don't think telling the immigration officer that you'll only be there for one day is a problem.
Coz when we were crossing the border, the Canadian Immigration Officer asked us why we're going to Canada and for how long? We told her we're applying for our PR cards and will stay only for 24 hours.
As long as you provide them with a canadian address then they will issue you your PR card, but you need to wait about 38 days, processing time takes very long. In my family's case, it took about 2 months before we got our PR cards.
Hopefully, this helps a bit.

The immigration officer actually has the right to not issue the card if you tell him that you will not be staying at the Canadian address you provided when the card arrives.

However, there is nothing to worry about. If you move to Canada for good within 6 months, it is enough for you to notify immigration that you have an address in Canada now and to send the card there. If it is more than 6 months, it will be treated as a PR card renewal rather than a first time card and you will have to fill out an application, pay a $100 fee and they will notify you to pick up the card at the local CIC office where you live.

The way you get to Canada as a PR without a PR card is by using your landing papers if you are visa exempt and if you are not visa exempt, you apply for a PR travel document at the Canadian embassy.

My family and I are very lucky then. It's good that the immigration officer who interviewed us is very nice, took about 10 minutes only and before we know it, we were being welcomed as permanent residents.Whew!! ???
