Okay, I'll try to help you the best I can. I don't know as much about Edmonton as Calgary (although my husband has lived there so if you decide on Edmonton, I may bother him for you :p).

1) Thank you for your kind words :) My brother is an electrical engineer and his wife-to-be is a microchemist! How funny is that? She is from Vietnam and he is from the USA.

2) Honestly, if you want to make the biggest impact as an engineer, go to Edmonton. Get your Canadian certifications and maybe a little education (such as PG Diploma). Edmonton needs engineers badly. The weather up there is awful. And I mean, awful. It's cold and dreary year round. My husband, who was born in Canada, hates Edmonton with a passion and refuses to ever consider moving there again. However, they pay very well for engineers and are more likely to give you a chance to get into your field (instead of being stuck in survival work the rest of your life - the dark side of immigration). What if you hate Edmonton? Stay there and work as a engineer for 2 years, then move somewhere nicer. You'll have your Canadian experience behind you and ready to live somewhere a little warmer!

Not to say you won't find an engineer job in Calgary. It's very possible. I just feel, based on my research and news articles, that Edmonton has more opportunities for newcomers.

3) I don't know about neighborhoods in Edmonton. If you decide on it for sure (after my moving statement in #2 :p ) let me know and I'll bother my husband to see if he knows.

4) For real estate agents, honestly, I would wait until you have a job (not a survival job, a real job) to buy a house. By that time, you are working with other professionals and get word of mouth references. Word of mouth references are very good and you can also check the internet for reviews. I would also interview several agents before signing any agreements. Give it some thought and pick who you are most comfortable with, who seems to care about your needs and understands them AND your affordability. Since agents are paid on commission, some are very greedy and only care about selling you the most expensive house they can find. Personally, the house I live in now is being sold, so I've had my chance to meet dozens of agents (no one wants to buy this crappy place). I've kept the business cards of several that I liked so when we buy a house, we already have a few to interview.

But, wait to buy a house. Unless you have enough cash to pay it off 100%, don't buy it yet. A survival job won't pay enough for a house payment and living in most cases (especially if you wife isn't working) and it will eat up your savings.

5) I have never used this service, so take my post with a grain of salt

http://www.centrefornewcomers.ca/living_calgary.shtml

I have used this service - it's for women only, so you wife can sign up and make appointments. They also offer social programs where she can meet other immigrants and they offer English classes (or at least, they used to).

http://ciwa-online.com/

Lastly, obviously I've never lived in Edmonton, but I googled newcomers and found this website from the city: http://www.edmonton.com/moving-to-edmonton/newcomer-services.aspx Hopefully it is useful - I don't know for sure :D
Thanks a lot madam for your answer,

I just started my PR process through FSW 2013. It has time to land to Alberta.

I asked for real estate agents who help to rent a home. I lived in Sydney, Australia (2004-2006) there we had a rented home by help of agent. In this context I was asking about estate agents who are good and honest with their business (to rent a home through them). My first preference is to settle in Calgary only.... currently intention is to collect information for initial stay arrangement (cheaper with cost) ....

Anyways thanking you again. I am bit worried with the matter of job. Actually I am good Mechanical engineer but i seen australian world where nobody was ready to interview me even, but i am trying to be positive and start new mission for my life and for my child.

Regards.

I would avoid agents to rent homes. Those homes are always more expensive! You can find lots of rentals on Kijiji or Rent Faster (rentfaster.ca).

Good news everyone! I got my PPR today! :D

Ottawa (despite being a site of walk-outs) has never stopped issuing COPRs. From what I understand, the immigration officers aren't actually on strike, but another group of diplomats are.

PR Card

Greeting and congralutions to the ones who has made steps forward in the process. Becoming a Permanent resident is really a satisfactory and comfortating feeling of achieving your main goal.good luck in the further steps.

This question is directed to the experienced ones who are still in the forum. How long did the PR card take to get on your mailbox? It's been more than 6 weeks now for mine and it hasn't been delivered yet. I checked the CIC we page and there is no sign what my actual pr card status is. what is clearly noted on the web page is that I landed and officially became a permanent resident.

I was expecting to check the PR card status on the web age but no luck on that.

thanks in advance and again my best wishes to all,

A ghost but active forum reader&writer! ( I feel not ok writing in here since my English is kind of misunderstand-able but hope it can get better along the years)
