I want to know the procedure in obtaining an Alberta driver's license. What docs are needed? I am in Calgary. Was told I need to verify my Nigerian DL and that it will be collected before they can issue the AB own. Is this the norm or is there a way around it?

@ Gent2, DL verification is done by naija embassy just take a look at this site http://www.servicealberta.gov.ab.ca/1671.cfm
You can also get driver's handbook and all you need to know about computer test, road test and practice questions on the site.

i work and live in Chilliwack BC, a city with dutch origins,quiet and quite European in outlook. Not so many Nigerian families,about 5 for now working mainly in the health sector as nurses,rehab assistants and patient care associates. Its about 30minutes from Abbotsford BC,where you have more AFricans, a Redeemed Parish.
Chilliwack is basically an agro-based economy with a general hospital (in need of specialist physicians esp trained in South Africa and Uk). Its about 90minutes from Vancouver Eastwards.
there is a steady growth here, with an estimated 1,000 new homes being built this year and an expansion of the University of Fraser Valley.
Homes are cheap for now,but could be higher with Skytrain coming to Abbotsford, houses could triple, for now still like an Ikorodu compared to a VI in terms of cost.
there are jobs especially if you know the best way to apply for a job in Canada-by face,if you appear,they don't forget you.
In BC, healthcare is still good,once you get MSP card,please get a private insurance before you get your card cos one night as uninsured resident will cost about $1476.00/night in the hospital, you don't want to pay that even if you have a million dollars.

Hmmmmm dreamteam so glad to hear from you i was beginning to wonder where you all have been of course am not unmindful of the busy schedule over there. Please you guys should keep in torch and keep the flag flying.

After 5 workdays and 1 weekend (total 7days in Canada), i got a fulltime job with Equinox. its an call center job like the one with Mtn/glo/ zain etc.. salary is not much though but it is a gain for me:
1) if i calculate it interm of naira, it surpasses my salary in Nigeria by abt 35k after tax.
2) i am gaining Canadian experience.
3) it is an office job.. although it will require that i take alot.
4) at least my remainng landing fund will be preserved.... hence me too i go begin dey get savings.
5) feeding house rent et al is now catered for..
6) i was at first billed to be on the Bank of montreal project( whee will ll make calls on behalf of Bank of montreal) which ll require nite work but i told them i will like to improve my listening french ability so i was tranfered to the telecoms team.
7) i choose to wrk 7hrs morning with 30mins paid brake.. so i can av time to attend french classes which i av enrolled for at my own bill.. i need just 1-2months for to train my ears to pick the qUEBECIERS Accent....
av got another interview for today... this with higher pay...by then i will now choose which to go for... but of course, at this stage i wont let money b d determining factor.

the interview was good... any one who had gone 2ru the rigorous interview in Nigeria will not find the one here hard.
was interviewed by a weird looking canadian with ear-ring in both ears...( oh thank God i did not come here in suit... i said within).....
we went 2ru d y should i hire u, what is/are ur strenght, what will ur last boss say abt you..
2) and to the suprisinng one: u mean u av just spent a week in MONTREAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3) was taken to see the supervisor... iand i did a recording for to test my english since it is an English only position. where i will av to call eglish customers....
they said the recording was good... was taken to the huge calling center whre there were abt 500pple at their call desk with head set... was should where i will likely be positioned...
4) got done with the paper wrk.. was asked to produce proof of identity and legal status to wrk in canada.to which i showed them my SIN-number and passport + visa...
5) afetr which i was told to come resume training on Monday 7th.
As i was adviced by Francomaj b4 leaving Nigeria, i got a letter of recommendation from one of my boss in Nigeria.. and the letter was really helpful to me when they demanded that i provide a refrencee i gladly showed the letter and that was it
