You'll have to wait a few more years before you can apply for citizenship. Currently, you need to live 3 years out of the last 4 in Canada in order to apply - and two of those years have to be accumulated after you become a PR. So it's too early for you to apply under the current rules.

The new rules are expected to come into place this summer. Under the new rules, you must live in Canada for 4 out of 6 years to qualify for citizenship. Time spent living in Canada before become a PR will no longer count. You will fall under the new rules for citizenship since you will be applying after the new citizenship rules come into place. So it will be 2018 at the earliest before you will qualify to apply.

You only count the last four years, so being here in the 1990s won't figure into your calculation. You CAN count time living in Canada before you were a PR, but only within the last four years, and you must have been a PR for two years before you can apply for citizenship.

Hello Friends,

I would like to know one thing.
I am separated from my husband. He lives in India and I do live in Canada. He was just on visitor visa and dont live in Canada. I am applying for 1 year separation divorce in July.
I am going to apply for citizenship. I am not sure what should I select in marital status. Legally separated ??

Please help me out what should I do.

Thank you so much

I would suggest that you indicate your marital status at the time you apply for citizenship. If you are still married at that time, select "married". Attach a note relating to question "4 B, Marital Status" and indicate that you are physically separated from your husband, he is not residing in Canada, and you are planning to file for divorce.

Unfortunately you will have to wait at least until 2018 since you will be applying under the new rules. These new rules (Bill C-24) will be effective this summer.
