Joint accounts and writing letters for online applications

Discussion in 'Visitors' started by ChrisC, Sep 8, 2018.

  1. Joint accounts have occasionally been discussed here, and I've read that they can be presented if accompanied by an approval from the other holder. I would like more detail on this, so I'll present my case.

I will present my own, single bank account for my proof of funds. Additionally, I am also the secondary holder in my father's joint account. Though he won't be accompanying me on the trip, he approves me to use as much of the joint account as I need and is ready to provide a statement to that effect. Will the fact that I'm a secondary holder count against me? Am I better off not showing this account?

Even if I can show the account, I plan on applying online which presents a few dilemmas.

I have typed up my explanation letter in Word, which leaves me no option to sign by hand. As I'm applying online, should I print this letter out, sign it, scan it and then upload the scan?

How about my father's statement? Should he sign a print out? Or can I upload his statement and my letter in the digital format without either of our hand written signatures?

  2. I showed joint account for my mother visitor visa application .we didnt attach any explanation letter along the application . I didn’t have any issue before or after the approval .

  3. I assume you were applying for your mother to visit you? Was she the primary holder or were you? Did you state you were supporting her in her application?

    Maybe @Bryanna can weigh in?

  4. Do you need to authenticate your father's signature since he is not one of the applicants?

  5. i applied for my mother .Yes i supported her in the application. We both are the primary account holder.

  6. Your dad is the larger contributor to that joint account, right?

You would not want it to seem like you're financially dependent on your dad to support your visit. Hopefully you have adequate finances of your own without this bank balance.

You can include the statement for this joint bank account, but I would not recommend showing it as the primary source of your finances

I understand. In an earlier thread, you suggested my father provide a letter authorizing me to use the account. Given that I am considering applying online, there are a few issues I am worried about:

I have typed up my explanation letter in Word, which leaves me no option to sign by hand. As I'm applying online, can I upload this document as is? Or should I print this letter out, sign it, scan it and then upload the scan?

How about my father's letter authorizing me to use our joint account? Should he sign a print out? Or can I upload his letter and my letter in the digital format (Word DOCX) without either of our hand written signatures?

Given that I'm including my father's joint account, should I include the account's balance in the Funds available for my stay (CAD) in the application?
